THOSE heading to Saturday night’s Mount Gambier Cups can breath a sigh of relief…Ryan Hryhorec won’t be there.

Hryhorec has dominated the provincial features like no other in recent years, including becoming the first trainer in the nation to complete a clean sweep of a state’s provincial squaregaiting Cups in 2022.

A regular on the dais in 2023, Hryhorec has kick-started this season’s circuit by winning three of the four cups.

Beginning with Regal Attire’s success in the Strathalbyn Trotters’ Cup on March 2, Hryhorec won the Pacers’ and Trotters’ Cups at Globe Derby last night.

Just as he did during his previous start, Regal Attire was too good among the squaregaiters, this time overcoming a 40-metre handicap.

With Gaita Pullicino in the cart, the son of Muscle Hill rated 2:02.8 over 2645 metres as Cyclone S Adams and Aldebaran Dexta – also trained by Hryhorec – filled the placings.

“I felt he would be too good again despite going back another 10-metre handicap,” Hryhorec said. “He did it quite comfortably in the end.”

Less than an hour earlier, Hryhorec reined Lord Zarias to a narrow win in the Pacers’ Cup.

After following the pacemaker, Artillery, throughout from his second row draw, Lord Zarias finished along the sprint lane to score by a half-neck from the front runner.

Hesashark was seven metres away third in 2:00.4 for the 2645-metre trip.

“He only just got there, but he got there in time,” Hryhorec said. “They will both have a few easy days now then I will aim them at the Gawler Cups in a fortnight.”
