6Harness racing returns to the Gympie Turf Club on Melbourne Cup day with the club conducting its second meeting this year at the Gympie thoroughbred sand track.

The addition of the Gympie races will provide a non-TAB harness racing double header on Cup day with the Redcliffe Harness Racing Club also conducting their annual event

Racing Queensland has programmed five races to be held at each of Gympie and Redcliffe  on Tuesday 3 November with Sullivan Livestock sponsoring the self-funded Gympie club day.

The GTC staged three harness races on the racetrack in July with the harness racing owners, trainers and drivers involved pleased with the way their horses handled the sand racing surface.

Gympie lost its Melbourne Cup thoroughbred race date many years ago with camel racing being substituted  in recent years to provide entertainment on Cup day. The Club decided after the initial Trot day success that harness racing was a better option for the 2015 event.

The traditional Gympie Melbourne Cup luncheon will again be held in the Pavilion run by Little Haven Palliative Care.

The five-race Redcliffe Paceway card will be supported by on-track activities including a Melbourne Cup luncheon in the Club’s Pacers restaurant/Function Centre.

Melbourne Cup event day tickets are available from both clubs.

All harness races on Cup day carry prizemoney of $1500 per race.

The Gympie races will be run over 1980 metres and Redcliffe races over 1780 metres. Nominations for both the Gympie and Redcliffe harness race meetings close at 10am, Thursday 29 October.
