Queensland reinswomen off to a flying start for Team Teal
Queensland’s female harness drivers are off to a brilliant start with their Team Teal campaign, raising $3000 for the Women’s Cancer Foundation from driving wins alone in the first three days.
Ambassadors Trista Dixon, Brittany Graham, Dannielle McMullen and Isobel Ross have been donning their Cancer Foundation silks and teal pants in each of their races since the initiative started on Wednesday, raising much needed funds for ovarian cancer research.
So far Narissa McMullen, Trista Dixon and Madi Dux have been victorious, helping to raise the current sum of $3000, which is set to rise with a generous $600 donated to Women’s Cancer Foundation each time a female driver crosses the line victorious at Queensland’s Albion or Redcliffe tracks.
The research initiative is supported by Racing Queensland, UBET, Albion Park Harness Racing Club and Redcliffe Harness Racing Club.
Racing Queensland and UBET will each donate $200 to each victorious drive. Albion Park and Redcliffe Harness Racing Club will also contribute $200 to each win at their respective tracks.
With no effective vaccine, early detection tests or screening programs for ovarian cancer, most women are not diagnosed until their cancer is at an advanced stage.
As a result, more than 70 per cent of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will not survive their disease.
Ambassador Dannielle McMullen said she was very pleased to be participating in such a worthwhile initiative.
“It’s really great just to get behind the Woman’s Cancer Foundation and make some money, and it promotes women in racing which is also positive,” she said.
TEAM TEAL (teal being the ovarian cancer awareness colour) will be selling wrist bands on track while some of girls from the mini trotting fraternity will be “rattling cans” to help with fundraising.
A gala evening will be held on 11 March as a final fundraiser for Queensland’s Team Teal initiative, celebrating the efforts of Queensland’s female drivers and the money raised for the Women’s Cancer Council.
Congratulations to our Queensland reinswomen so far and keep up the great effort for Team Teal.
