2There will be even more reason to rush to the mighty Murray River this festive season, with Cobram’s cup day to lure in the sun-chasing holiday-makers.

To be held December 27, the Christmas Day public holiday, the Jim Phillips Memorial Cobram Pacing Cup is set to host a big crowd, says Cobram Harness Racing Club secretary Bob Watson.

“The plans are going very well and there has been a lot of interest in the day,” Mr Watson said. “It’s a very big day this year with the holiday being on the Tuesday. The tourists tend to come to town for the break the day after Christmas and we should get quite a crowd.”

Further fuelling the migration north for river lovers is that they missed out last holiday period, when heavy rains drenched the top of the state.

“The river flooded in November, which took a big toll on our Melbourne Cup day and the town, so people who missed out then will be keen to get back to the area this holidays,” Mr Watson said.

“I’m hoping for a big turnout, even bigger than last year when we had our 40th and it was a big day for the club. The cup day lifts the image of the club, and that has lifted a hell of a lot in the last eight years.”

And there will be plenty to lure locals, trots fans and holiday-makers to the Racecourse Rd course.

“The course looks magnificent. There are plenty of lawns and shaded areas and the roses are out,” Mr Watson said.

“We’ve got the bush band from Albany, Killing Time, who were here last year and were very well received. We have the jumping castle, face painting and free icy poles for kids and there is free entry into a cup sweep courtesy of the local hotels as well as other giveaways.”

And they are just the sideshow to some quality racing, headlined by the $30,000 Group 3 cup and the $20,000 Central Murray Credit Union Cobram Trotters Cup.

“The quality of our trotting races are very good and the cup stands up very well.”
