IT has been a few years now since Rossmore horseman Kevin Pizzuto rode a wonderful wave of success with his champion pacer Tiger Tara.
But the Inter Dominion-winning trainer returned to the spotlight on Monday afternoon when five-year-old gelding Loorrim Lake made it back-to-back wins in the time honoured M. H. Treuer Memorial at Bankstown Paceway.
The victory also provided reinsman Wes Komorowski with his biggest career win in the gig.
The Group 2 $50,000 feature, which has been won by so many champions over the years, was run at a frantic pace right from the start, and it was obvious a long way from home that runners sitting in trailing positions would come over the top of the pacemakers.
Stablemate to the winner, Arden Messi took the lead with a lap to travel after he had faced the breeze and driver Josh Gallagher attempted to steal a winning break.
But his tough run told on him with 400 metres to run when Loorrim Lake emerged from the pack and coasted past him, maintaining a clear advantage down to the line to score by just under four metres with Bathurst pair, Ellmers Image and Atomic Red giving chase.
Mach Da Vinci also ran on to dead-heat with Atomic Red for third.
The Bathurst Harness Racing Club has attracted trainers from several Western District centres, making racing for tonight’s eight-race program interesting.
On paper, champion driver Amanda Turnbull appears set to dominate with seven favoured runners.
She headed to Cowra last Sunday afternoon and went within a half head of landing a winning treble.
One of Amanda’s Cowra winners was Our Princess Kennedy, a mare having her first Australian start for her.
The four-year-old looked impressive as, after doing work in the run, she careered away to score by 13 metres and Turnbull is wasting no time with her new acquisition, backing her up tonight.
Quoted as a $1.40 favourite, Our Princess Kennedy has drawn barrier five in the Hynash Constructions Pace (Race 6) and should be able to continue on her winning way.
Browns Creek youngster Studleigh Melise is making her much-anticipated debut to racing in the final event tonight after four impressive trial wins at Bathurst.
A win by the filly would be a boost for owner Ray Davis, who has not been enjoying the best of health.
