Leading Stallions in the West:                                                                                                       The Perth Yearling Sales by Dean Baring

For keen students of breeding the domination of the recent Melbourne yearling sale by the progeny of Somebeachsomewhere and Bettors Delight would not have come as any surprise. The progeny of these in-demand stallions averaging around $60,000 each.

Somebeachsomewhere has dominated the sales rings of North America since his progeny first appeared four years ago. He had immediate success with his first crop including colt Captaintreacherous and filly Somewhereoverarainbow, both million dollar earners. This first crop also provided Sunshine Beach (1:47.4), now at stud in Australia. The following three crops of Somebeachsomewhere have continued to dominate two and three year old racing with a distinct advantage over his rivals in both speed and earnings per foal.

It took some time for Australian breeders to be convinced of the siring ability of Somebeachsomewhere but this appears to have risen with the success of his outstanding colt Our Waikiki Beach and his standout filly Whereibelong. The Melbourne yearling sale saw him claim the top priced colt at $150,000 and the top priced filly at $125,000.

The sales success of Bettors Delight needs little explanation. He is the first stallion to become the leading sire in North America, Australia and New Zealand in the same year and has now achieved this honour for three consecutive years. And of course we all know of his standout progeny in Adore Me (1:47.7 and $1,667,029), Beautide (1:50.2 and $2,145,412), Bettor Cover Lover (1:53.8 and $1,026,427) and Caribbean Blaster (1:52.6 and $1,113,677) among a host of downunder champions.

Next weekend, Perth yearling sales buyers get a chance to be part of this with four progeny by Somebeachsomewhere and three by Bettors Delight going under the hammer. You can take a closer look at their pedigrees by clicking on the hyperlinks below. These have bee especially added for the benefit of harnessbred.com readers.

The lone Somebeachsomewhere filly, Lot 55, is from Australian Pacing Gold winner Leilani Lombo with her fourth dam being the standout mare Annas Ann, winner of 21 races at Gloucester Park.

The three colts on offer all provide exciting pedigrees. Lot 74 has Bettors Delight as the broodmare sire, thus combing the best two sires available in Australia at the moment while Lot 107 brings in Artsplace as the broodmare sire. A quick look at the link in Classic Families will show just how successful this cross has been in America.

Lot 106 has the most interesting of the pedigrees. He is entirely American blood being from the Aileen (U26) family that has produced Hall of Fame Immortals Meadow Skipper and Countess Vivian. His pedigree also boasts a 3×3 cross to Beach Towel one of the great progenitors of speed in America.

His breeder, Dr Ed Dewar of Whitby Falls Stud, describes the colt as being one of the most impressive he has presented at the sales, already well over 15 hands and looking more like a two year old than a yearling. He also bears a very strong resemblance to his sire. On request, Ed has provided the photo of his colt below to harnessbred.com.

BB3+There are three fillies but no colts by Bettors Delight on offer.

As well as presenting three of the Somebeachsomewhere progeny, Kevin Charles is also offering one of these three fillies in Lot 25 from the Life Sign mare Soho Paris. Although a shy family, the grand dam New Arrival is represented by eight progeny on Classic Families.

The second Bettors Delight filly for sale is Lot 40 from the prolific Red Diamond family which boasts Blacks A Fake, Smooth Satin, Noodlum and Tactile amongst its standout performers. Keen students of breeding will note the sixth dam is the outstanding matron Tactics.

The final Bettors Delight offering is Lot 53 from a Holmes Hanover mare. This filly is closely bred to derby winner Excel Stride from the lady Antrim family that also produced New Zealand champion mare Armalight.

While the Perth yearling sale offerings by these two champions stallions is not large, they include some very interesting pedigrees from families that have produced a host of star performers. We would expect to see them in the winners circle in the near future. Best of Luck.
