The “perfect preparation” has already paid dividends for trainer-driver Nathan Turnbull and his pacer Better Be The Best.
The two-year-old caused a minor upset when beating the favourite Major Celebrity in a semi-final of the NSW Breeders Challenge at Menangle on Saturday night.
Sitting behind the leader, Better Be The Best overcame a final sectional of 26.4 seconds to win.
“He’s had a perfect preparation,” said Turnbull.
“We had this race mapped out after the Gold Crown was over and I couldn’t be happier with him.
“He’s pretty alert and not much worries him.
“He trialled on Monday and I just let him go around and I might do the same next Monday in preparation for the final.”
Better Be The Best has won six of his eight starts.
Turnbull returns to Bathurst tonight with seven starters and takes to the meeting a personal record of 81 winners for the season.
