NZ BREEDERS STAKES – FIFTY YEARS OF WINNERS BREEDING DECADE BY DECADE

This article will take a specific look at the breeding of the winners of the NZ Breeders Stakes for the decade 2003 – 2012.

2003 SHORTYS GIRL : see earlier under 1993 – 2002 decade

2004 COBURG : 1:56.8, $204,995, ten wins, thirteen places; by Adios line stallion and world record holder Falcon Seelster out of Sokys Atom winning mare Vicario, NZ Broodmare of Year, dam of thirteen foals for nine winners including Stunin Cullen, 1:54.1, GN Derby, NZSS – 3c, Ballarat/Hunter Cups; grand dam of The Match Point/The Culture 1:51.6; third dam of Uncle Jord 1:51.1.

Coburg’s unraced dam Burgundy Lass left fifteen progeny, three winners dominated by Vicario’s half-brother dual NZ Cup winner Il Vicolo, 1:56.7, $1,580,948, NZSS – 2c and 3c, NZ 2yo Championship., NZ/GN/NSW Derbies, NZFFA, Ben Hur, 2/3/4/aged Pacer of Year, Pacer and Harness Horse of Year, successful sire – Jack Cade, Tricky Vic. Her fillies included unraced My Sparkling Burgundy, dam of millionaire Gotta Go Cullen, NZSS – 2c, NZ 2yo Championship, NSW Derby, Messenger, Auckland Cup and third dam of Our Triple Play 1:51.0.

Unraced grand dam Nancy Iola was dam of Niketia, 1:52,2US, $394,035; Ciccio Star, grand dam of Waltzing With Cullen 1:51.7, Vasari 1:52.0 $192,799;  Spirit Of Venus, grand dam of Fake Spirit, Delightful Lady Classic, NSW Oaks, grand dam of Chilli Palmer, 1:51.5, WA Fremantle Classic and third dam of Jinnis Fantasy 1:51.4US, $438,075; Umoja 1:51.1US, $225,180 while Coburg’s third dam Rosehaven, left sensational pacing mare and producer Black Watch, Broodmare of Year with descendants far too many to list. This is the family of Regina.

Coburg won the mares double of NZ Breeders Stakes (also twelfth)/Premier Mares Championship (also sixth) plus GN Breeders Stakes at four being named four year old mare pacer of year. Dam of ten foals, fiver winners including Veste, Caduceus Club Classic, dam of four winners, Its All About Faith, 1:54.3, $226,470, NZSS – 3c.

2005 LADY TODDY : 1:57.7, $176,059, thirteen wins, nineteen places; by Nevele R sire Live Or Die from race winning Talk About Class mare Tarantella, Lady Toddy was bred by Wayne Francis. Tarantella was grand dam of Courage Tells, 1:54.1, $433,861. Lady Toddy’s grand dam The First Lady was unraced while third dam Tiawana won four races, dam of six winners including prolific producers Tammera (dam of Kindergarten Stakes winners Franco Tamboura/Franco Trubrooke; Tentative, grand dam of Mongolian Hero, 1:49.3US, $461,698 and Lizzie Maguire, $465,779, GN Oaks, Jewels Diamond – 2f; Tammera is third dam of Australian Derby winner Im Yosemite Sam, 1:51.1US and fourth dam of Brazen River 1:49.1US) and Tenisha, dam of Irak Attack, 1:50.2US, $414,826; Rider On The Storm, Franklin Cup; Tisha, dam of Jaccka Taurus, Bathurst Gold Crown

The winner of the Central Otago Cup and third in Premier Mares Championship, Lady Toddy was dam of eleven foals for eight winners.

2006 MAINLAND BANNER : 1:55.1, $684,579, seventeen wins, three placings from twenty two starts, only unplaced once in both NZ and Australia. By champion sire Christian Cullen from unraced Sokys Atom mare Corporate Banner, dam of open class pacer Titan Banner, 1:56.1, $340,853, Franklin/Methven Cups, Hannon Memorial, Maurice Holmes Vase and Caitlin Banner, dam of Trojan Banner 1:50.1US.

Unraced grand dam Graceful Poplar left twelve live foals, four winners including winning producing fillies Blazerlite, Eloquent Poplar, Impressive Poplar.

Third dam Bachelor Morn’s ten live foals produced no winners but fillies that bred on included Very Happy Poplar, dam of Our New Life, NSW Breeders Plate; Cash Asset, dam of Happy Asset, 1:56.3, $783,452, Ben Hur, Auckland Cup; Mighty Khan 1:51.3US, $365,778. Very Happy Poplar was third dam of champion pacer, multi-millionaire and twelve time Group One winner Im Themightyquinn, 1:50.4AUS. This family traces back to foundation mare Dusky Morn, NZ Cup winners Loyal Nurse/millionaire The Fixer, Auckland Cup winner Enterprise and ID Trotters Grand Final winner Play On.

Mainland Banner also won the NZ Oaks, NZ Cup as four year old (youngest and only 4yo mare to do so), Premier Mares Championship, Messenger, Taylor Mile, three year old filly pacer of year, four year old mare pacer of year and Pacer/Harness Horse of Year.

The dam of five foals in NZ, all of whom have been winners, a further seven in Australia for four further winners. They include Return To Sender 1:51.3US, $218,849; Rocker Band 1:51.8AUS, $360,354, Jewels Diamond – 4m, VIC Ladyship Cup; Glenferrie Classic, 1:55.9, Equine Stakes; Island Banner 1:51.4AUS

2007 ITS ELLA : 1:56.4, $291,639, sixteen wins, fifteen places; Southland bred Washington VC mare from Son Of Afella six race winning mare Just Ella, whose eight foals included final foal Its Ella. Unraced grand dam Exmoot was a productive breeder, grand dam of Nevele R Fillies winner Some Legacy; fourth dam of Southern Hemisphere’s richest standardbred Blacks A Fake, winner of thirty eight races at Albion Park, four Interdominion Pacing finals, eleven Group Ones, 1:53.7, $4,575,438 and fifth dam of Royal Story, NSW Breeders Challenge – 3f.

Unraced third dam Tacwyn left productive racewinning broodmare Tacten, dam of Tact Boyden; grand dam of Tactical Rein 1:51.4US, $340,071; third dam of 2010 NZ Breeders Stakes winner Tact Lizzie (see below); fourth dam of Tact Hayleys Delight, 1:52.2, $300,736 and SA Oaks winner Awaywiththefairies. This is the Red Diamond family, tracing through First Water and Its Ella’s fourth dam Tactics – dam of Deft (Noodlum) and Tactile and sixth dam of 2021 NZ Breeders Stakes winner Watch Me Now, 1:49.3US, Montana DJ, Cardigan Bay Stakes – 2c, BD Joe, Harness Jewels Emerald

Its Ella won her last start which was her second Premier Mares Championship and she was twice voted five year old and older mare pacer of year. She is the dam of nine foals, five winners to date.

2008 TIME TO FLY : 2:00.1, $158,418, eight wins, fourteen places; Time To Fly was bred by Graeme Iggo, by Sands A Flyin from Limuru, an unraced Oblivion II mare from the Petro Star branch of the Dairy Maid family (Norice). Iggo also bred Limuru and sold her after breeding Time To Fly to Bill Hickey and Gwenyth Smith.

Limuru left one other winner from ten live foals, is third dam of The Warp Drive, $464,971 TAS Pacing Championship, SA Cup while winning grand dam Kinshasha left sixteen foals for eight winners including Neros BB mare Kisumu, NZSS – 2f, dam of Turkana, Nevele R Fillies, QLD Oaks, grand dam of Code Black, 1:50.8, $362,835 and Lovin Miss Daisy 1:50.2US, $258,187. Time To Fly’s third dam is three race winner Hindu Star whose countless descendants include Monkey King, Iraklis, Brad Adios, Gaius Caesar, Lavros Star, O Baby.

Winner and placed eighth in consecutive Breeders Stakes, Time To Fly’s NZ Breeders Stakes victory was Dexter Dunn’s first Group One winning drive. Time To Fly is the dam of eight foals for four winners including Check In, 1:54.8AUS, twelve wins, $244,607; Our Dance Time, seventeen wins, 1:53.2AUS, $218,530

2009 KIWI INGENUITY : 1:51.1, $516,821, eleven wins, eight places; by champion sire Christian Cullen from a two race winning Miles McCool mare Kiwi Express who is the dam of ten foals, six winners including lightly used stallion Buy Kiwi Made, sire of Queensland Oaks winner Sociable and Kiwis Can Fly, dam of Kiwi Legend, 1:54.0AUS, $217,441.

Grand dam Another Kiwi is the unraced dam of nine winners from ten foals including Cyclone Kiwi, 1:49.4US, $508,534. Third dam Supreme Kiwi was a winner, dam of seven winners from fourteen foals including Taylor Mile winner Kiwi Supreme. Kiwi Ingenuity traces back to foundation mare Harolds Rest.

Kiwi Ingenuity also won NZ Oaks, Queen Of Hearts, Jewels Diamond – 4m and Premier Mares Championship. She is the dam of six live foals for four winners including Team Kiwi, 1:51.4US, Kiwis On Show 1:52.2, Kiwis Are Flying 1:53.4AUS.

2010 TACT LIZZIE : 1:57.2, $128.988, ten wins, five places; by Christian Cullen from New York Motoring mare Tact Hayley, Tact Lizzie descends from the tough Southland Red Diamond breed.

Non-winning dam Tact Hayley produced eight winners (five in Australia) from twelve foals, including multiple WA winner Tact Major; Southern Belle/Equine Stakes winner Tact Hayley Jane, dam of Tact Tama 1:51.0AUS and Tact Hayleys Delight 1:52.2AUS, $300,736.

Unraced grand dam Tact Rein’s eight predominantly female winners from fifteen foals included Tactical Rein, 1:51.4US, $340,071. Tact Rein was grand dam of Slick Lavra 1:51.3US and third dam of SA Oaks winner Awaywiththefairies. Race winning third dam Tacten produced six winners from eleven foals, all but two were fillies including Tact Boyden, $108,828, grand dam of Tactical Dreamer, third dam of Flammin Tact and Leonard Memorial winner Tact Del.

Tact Lizzie is the dam of seven foals for five winners including Tact Tate 1:50.3US, $489,729, VIC Bonanza, Bohemia FFA, Treuer Memorial; Tact Maggie 1:51.3AUS.

2011 DE LOVELY : 1:54.0, $613,355; fifteen wins, six places; by broodmare gem Falcon Seelster from Beach Towel mare Copper Beach, above average filly who won both the NZ Oaks (won by mother and daughter) and VIC Oaks, NZ three year pacing filly of year. Copper Beach’s ten foals produced six winners.

Unraced grand dam Les Payzen Star left four winners from seven foals while De Lovely’s third dam was twice NZ Broodmare of Year and Broodmare of Excellence Interchange. Her offspring included Revenoz, $264,670, NZ Championship – 2 and double millionaire pacer and successful sire Elsu, 1:53.6, $2,030,796, twice pacer/Harness Horse of Year, eleven Group Ones including ID Pacers Final (clean sweep of three heats), GN/NZ/NSW Derbies, Auckland Cup twice, Messenger, Chariots Of Fire, Hunter Cup and sire of Chilli Palmer, dam sire of Raukapuka Ruler, GN Derby.

Fourth dam Zenover another Broodmare of Year whose extensive progeny included Gp1 winners Motoring Magic and Zebec. De Lovely’s family traces back to foundation mare Bell Aurore.

De Lovely’s successes at three and four saw her named three year old filly pacer and four year pacing mare of year with significant victories including Ladyship Stakes, NZ/AUS Oaks, Jewels Diamond – 3f, Breeders Crown – 3f and Queen Of Hearts. The dam of five foals for three winners including Cole Porter, 1:52.0US, Sapling Stakes.

2012 CARABELLA : 1:55.2, $693,615; seventeen wins, two places; the first Bettors Delights to win a NZ Breeders Stakes, Carabella was never unplaced in nineteen starts. She is out of a non-winning Artsplace mare bred in North America in Andress Blue Chip. Dam of eleven progeny foaled in NZ, her six winners include Lady Cullen, dam of Belle Of Montana, 1:54.1, $589,343, NZSS – 2f, VIC Oaks, Nevele R Fillies, Jewels Diamond – 3f, Queen Of Hearts, VIC Ladyship Cup and Andress Blue Chip, grand dam of Qbred Triad – 2c winner First String.

Race winning grand dam Athens Blue Chip left Athena Blue Chip 1:50.3US, $457,118, multiple group winning filly, dam of Arts Chip, 1:49.3US, $726,999, USA Pacing Championship; Saddle Ridge, dam in NZ of five winners including ID Pacers Consolation and WA winner The Bucket List, $537,834, three in 1:52.0US including Somewhereinbrooklyn 1:50.0US. This is the North American family of Jessie Pepper with Carabella thirteen generations removed from the family’s foundation mare.

Carabella’s seventeen victories included Ladyship Stakes, NZSS – 3f, Nevele R Fillies, GN/NZ Oaks, Jewels Diamond – 3f, Premier Mares Championship with her only “failures” seconds in the Queen of Hearts and NZYSS – 3f, established New Zealand records over 1950Mm/2400mM for both three year old fillies/overall mare’s record. She is the dam of six foals to date for four to race, all winners including Johnny Mac, 1:55.5.
