NARRABRI horseman, Jarred Hetherington has a passion for harness racing that goes right back to his childhood days.
His father Wayne grew up in Parkes at a time when harness racing was dominant in the town and Jarred followed in his footsteps and has met with plenty of success over the past decade.
He is currently training 15 horses from his Narrabri base and his enthusiasm has been buoyed by the arrival to the area of his good mate, former leading reinsman, Murray Sullivan.
Sullivan moved back to Forbes in 2012 after almost losing his life in the devastating floods that wiped out Queensland’s Lockyer Valley.
For the past eight years, Murray has worked for family members but is now looking forward to moving to Tamworth with his wife Meg and their two small children.
“Murray will be my primary stable driver now that he is living up this way,” said Hetherington.
“He and I have had a great working relationship and have etched a successful combination over the years.
“We think very much alike when it comes to racing and off the track and we just became very good mates.
“It will be great to have him in the area to drive my horses and I have no doubt other trainers will be keen to have him aboard their horses too.”
Hetherington explained that he had picked up a few more horses in recent weeks and was happy with the way his team had been building up.
“We are racing at Tamworth on Wednesday where we have three horses competing but that number will grow in the coming weeks and hopefully, I will have a strong team at the races into the future,” he said.
“Racing continues to become more competitive.
“I feel that the introduction of the training complex on the track at Tamworth is proving to be a boon for the area with more trainers getting good results.
“My best chance to win a race is with Listen To Lexy.
“She is still a two-year-old and I have been happy with what she’s done since joining our stable, winning two and racing consistently.
“I am lucky to be getting horses like her from Lex Crosby and Bernie Hewitt, who support me well.
“She should nearly lead from gate one tonight and if she can get a breather, she will be hard to catch.”
