The well-performed North Canterbury pair of BD Khaosan and Run Boy Run have been sold and will do their future racing in Australia.
The careers of the five-year-olds have actually been remarkably similar to date and they were on the same plane last week, although trotter BD Khaosan is heading for Andy Gath’s stable in Victoria and Run Boy Run is heading to Queensland.
BD Khaosan has been purchased by Queenslander Norm Jenkin, owner of Inter Dominion Trotting Championship winner, Tornado Valley.
BD Khaosan and Run Boy Run were both acquired by young trainers in Tom Bagrie and Mitchell Kerr respectively as youngsters to be raced by a group of friends and their timely sales will probably result in the owners reinvesting at the yearling sales next month.
They both won seven races from 30-odd starts and were sold having got up in the classes.
Bagrie leased BD Khaosan as an unbroken two-year-old from breeder Brent Smith and he qualified later that season at the end of his first prep.
He was a good three-year-old but really hit his straps at four, when he won four of five starts at one point, including a memorable success on Cup Day in 2017.
However he hadn’t won a race for over a year, often racing against open class trotters.
“He’d been going good races without having much luck and I’m sure he would have measured up once bedded into that top company,” said Bagrie.
“But the boys got a good offer and hopefully most of them will want to get another one now.”
BD Khaosan was raced by Bagrie along with seven schoolmates from Christchurch Boys High and earned stakes worth $74,000.
Run Boy Run was bought at the Premier Sale for $16,000 and won $62,000 for the Catch Me If You Can Syndicate, which was also Kerr and a bunch of mates.
He won five races last season and was a last start second in the Akaroa Cup last month when the backmarker on 30m.
“He was getting up in the grades and was going to be borderline open class or racing off long handicaps,” said Kerr.
“He did a great job really and I’m sure the owners will be keen to go again.”
Also of the same flight last week was Acuto, another good North Canterbury pacer who won five races and $50,000 for breeder-owner Graham Pearson and trainer Benny Hill.
The four-year-old by Art Official won three of his last five starts and was unplaced in the other two racing against the likes of Turn It Up, Funatthebeach and Alta Maestro.
Southland pacers Cool Scooter and Rise Above This along with the well-bred mare De Lancome have been other recent sales and were on the same flight to Australia last week.
