Telfers’ hot run continues
Team Telfer now holds an eight-win lead over their closest rivals at the head of the trainers’ premiership. Buoyed by the success of stars like Alta Wiseguy and Aardie’s Express the brother-sister combo of Steve and Amanda Telfer now have 71 wins for the year, with Robert and Jenna Dunn at 63, and Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen at 58. The All Stars have won by far the most money though with stakes of $2.259m.
So many milestones
What a week it was for trainers and drivers bringing up milestones. Tim White had his first as a trainer when Bobby Waterhouse won at Banks Peninsula on Sunday. Tim trains in partnership with his father Brent at Ashburton, while Tyler Dewe had his first when Teddy Baker careered away to a huge win at Winton. Nicky Chilcott created history by becoming the first woman in this country to train 500 winners as well as drive 500 winners when Phoebe Majestic won at Auckland, and Tim Williams had his 700th driving success with Aardiebytheseaside at Addington.
New year new result
What a difference a year makes. Last year when Ben Hope and Korbyn Newman sponsored a race at Motukarara they finished last and second last. Fast forward 12 months and on Sunday it was a Newman-Hope 1-2 at the other end of the field. Sod’s Law won the Juniors drivers’ event, with Tom Brady and Hope making up the quinella.
Change of scene for Arty
Just weeks ago he was nominated for the New Zealand Cup at Addington on Tuesday November 8. Now it’s been confirmed Australia’s glamour pacer Lochinvar Art will head to North America and link up with Australian trainers Shane and Lauren Tritton. Earlier this month Lochinvar Art bled after finishing sixth in Melton with connections saying he would either retire or head to the USA, where the use of anti-bleeding agent Lasix is legal. He will fly to Chicago in early October.
Bulldog bulldozes them again
The world’s fastest standardbred Bulldog Hanover has made it 10 wins in a row with a record-breaking display in Indiana. The holder of the world’s fastest ever mile won by six lengths in his latest outing at Hoosier Park in 1:46.6 to smash the track record of 1:47.4. The horse, driven by champion Kiwi Dexter Dunn, has now surpassed a million dollars in earnings for 2022 and has a career record of 25 wins from 33 starts. Dunn has 222 wins for the year and is currently the second highest earning driver in North America with stakes of $9.89 m, second only to Tim Tetrick ($11.4m). But Dunn had to settle for second in one of North America’s biggest and high-profile races, the Little Brown Jug at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Ohio. Dunn and Fourever led early but Bythemissal angled off the pylons to win the time-honoured feature by three quarters of a length in 1:51.2. It was the 77th running of the LBJ, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Ohio.
Club News : Methven
The Mount Harding track is in splendid order for the Methven Trotting Club’s big meeting of the year on Sunday October 9 starting at midday. The feature races being the Alabar Methven Cup ($30,000) and the What The Hill fillies and mares trot($20,000). The Methven Cup is likely to attract an extremely competitive field of those looking to secure a start in the upcoming New Zealand Cup. Kerry O’Reilly and groundsman Neil Burton have the track and surrounds in wonderful order and with the likelihood of a good day the club is looking for a bumper day.
