4EXPERIENCED horseman Darren McCall was elected as the new President for the United Harness Racing Association (UHRA) at the Annual General Meeting held at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Wednesday night.

McCall replaces outgoing President John McCarthy.

“The Committee and members are very appreciative of John and what he contributed to the UHRA over the past two years,” McCall said.

“It’s not an easy job to do especially while running a big stable and he did a great job.”

At the meeting, which was attended by more than 50 members, there were a number of items that the UHRA will immediately focus on.

“The main issues we will start with includes Harness Racing Australia’s Whip Policy which was on a lot of people’s minds last night,” McCall said.

“The others are 12-horse fields, field selection at metropolitan meetings and also the Sulky Fund.

“There were other items discussed but we will focus on these issues first.

“We will soon have a website up and running to keep people informed, particularly those that live in remote areas and can’t make the meetings, and hopefully grow our membership so everyone can have a say in the sport’s future.”

Premiership winning reinsman Gavin Fitzpatrick was re-elected as Vice President while the rest of the Committee is as follows:

Treasurer: Leon Jurd

Committee Members: Robert Morris, Bernie Hewitt, Jim Douglass, Glenn McElhinney

Secretary: Wally Mann
