LEADING NSW reinsman Robbie Morris returns to his happy hunting ground at Menangle this afternoon after campaigning in Victoria for the Inter Dominion.
While Morris had no joy with Petes Said So in the Inter Dominion Pacing Final, where he finished sixth, he also steered The Black Prince into eighth place in the Consolation Final.
And to keep his hand in, he headed for Cobram on Friday with five drives and came away with a win aboard Our Bright Light for trainer Conor Crook.
Aside from helping out with their young family, his trainer/wife KerryAnn will be delighted to have him home to share the duties with one of the biggest and busiest teams in harness racing.
Robbie has six drives on the eight-race card and five of those are for the Lucky Lodge stable he shares with KerryAnn.
The best of those won’t offer much to the punting public, as Wavethebill (Race 8) looks likely to start the shortest-priced favourite of the day and should have little trouble accounting for his rivals and remain unbeaten since joining the team from New Zealand.
Wavethebill won his first rate start in Australia by an incredible 26.9m, clearing out to score in a 1:51.1 mile rate.
Morris headed south with some of their team, leaving Josh Gallagher to take the reins on Wavethebill at his next start and he put in a repeat performance, scoring by 25.7m in the same mile rate of 1:51.1.
Despite drawing the outside of the front line this afternoon, a hat-trick looks a formality.
Yet the effervescent reinsman will fancy his chances of a winning treble today as at least two of his other drives look likely favourites.
Queen Of Strathfield (Race 1) has been racing in the best form of her career.
The classy square-gaiter couldn’t hold off Thebestbourbon at Menangle last week but is a $2.50 favourite to score her 10th win from 77 starts this afternoon.
Likewise speedy gelding Im Bills Last (Race 7) is chasing his 10th win from 77 starts and has been installed a $2.70 favourite to get the job done with Morris back in the bike.
Im Bills Last broke an exasperating run of outs when he scored an overdue win here three weeks ago before a close sixth last week behind Red Trix after being trapped wide and racing without cover for the entire journey.
