After classy colt Mighty Ronaldo had given a stylish frontrunning display to score an easy victory in the $25,000 Western Crown for two-year-old colts and geldings at Gloucester Park on Friday night his trainer-reinsman Justin Prentice said he had earmarked two group 1 $100,000 feature events for the youngster.
“He’s going to have a break and then we’ll aim him for the Pearl and the Westbred Classic in June,” Prentice said.
“He felt super tonight. There were pretty slow sectionals, but I was really happy with the way he went through the line.”
Mighty Ronaldo’s win completed a treble for Prentice as a trainer and driver, wins earlier in the program with Major Martini and Always An Honour.
Mighty Ronaldo burst straight into the lead from barrier three and he ambled through the opening quarters of the final mile in 32sec. and 31.2sec. before he gave his rivals no chance with final 400m sections in 28.8sec. and 27.6sec.
Mighty Ronaldo, by Alta Christiano, is out of the New Zealand-bred mare Millwoods Delight, who had 47 starts for six wins, nine placings and $49,648 in stakes. Bred by Trevor Lindsay, he was sold for $22,000 at the 2019 APG yearling sale in Perth. He now has earned $16,694 from a win, a second and fifth placing from three starts.
