EXPERIENCED harness racing identity Robert Marshall is the new chairman of Australia’s biggest harness racing centre, Club Menangle.

Marshall was elected to the position unanimously by the new board following the club’s Annual General Meeting.

He replaces long-serving chairman Ray Sharman, who steps down after serving a maximum six-year term as chairman.

Michael Brown has been elected deputy chairman with former harness journalist Bill Ellis retaining the role of executive director.

Marshall boasts an extensive background in harness racing as well as club administration.

He first joined this club’s board in 1991 before vacating the role in 1999 to take up a position on the board of Harness Racing NSW.

He also took a position on the Harness Racing Regulatory Authority before returning to the Club Menangle board in 2013.

Marshall has previously been NSW delegate to Harness Racing Australia and chairman of the Inter Dominion Council.

“It is an absolute honour to be chairman of the principal club,” said Marshall.

“This club has made outstanding progress in recent years and I look forward to working with my fellow directors to ensure that we make the most of the opportunities which lie ahead.

“The entire racing industry faces a number of challenges and it is important that our club takes on a leadership role.”

Outgoing chairman, Ray Sharman said it had been a privilege to serve as the chairman for the past 6 years.

“During that time the board has continued the momentum we received from the sale of Harold Park and laid the foundation for the future of our club and the harness racing industry,” he said.
