21 July 2023 | Mark Yole for Tasracing

Premiership leader Mark Yole was on fire last weekend driving four winners in Hobart. Yole has several good chances at the same venue again this Sunday night.

Weekend best

Race 10 – 9. Montana Lad

A model of consistency of late. This gelding was a very strong second here last week. He sat outside the leader with a very strong tempo and fought on gamely. He is very versatile as we have seen lately as he can do work or sit up and sprint. That gives me lots of options here. If there is no speed, I can pop around to sit outside the leader again or if they do run along, he will be finishing off strongly. Either way he is a great chance.

Race 8 – 2. Spooky Girl

This mare’s run simply had to be seen to be believed last week. From a wide front row draw I got posted three-wide after being left out there early. She was entitled to get tired but halfway around the corner she picked the bit up and tried her guts out. She was in front all the way up the straight until the sprint lane runner just nabbed her on the line. She really deserved to win that race, but it just wasn’t to be. Here she comes up with a much more suitable draw, I definitely shouldn’t be getting stuck three-wide the trip. If I can get a nice sit in the first four and save her up for the last 400m, I think she will be right in the finish.

Race 5 – 1. A Good Red

I’m going for one here that may raise a few eyebrows. This gelding has been going better than its form reads and although this is a tough race I think that this horse is knocking on the door. He has been driven along the pegs its last few and been finishing off well. It gets a perfect draw here to settle leaders back, if not then three pegs. It will need some luck but if he gets it could definitely be big odds for followers. If this race doesn’t work out, then followers should do themselves a favour and keep an eye on him as he will be winning one soon.

Value runner

Race 1 – 6. Syzate

This mare has been a model of consistency since winning in Launceston four starts ago. I was able to pick up the drive that night and we enjoyed a lovely run just off a strong speed. She used her fast sprint to get home over the top of her rivals. Since then, she has run three seconds behind the sires winner Baby You A Song and handy NZ mare Killarney Dance.

This looks an easier race on paper. She is very one dimensional in that she must be saved for one sprint and can’t do any work in her races. With that being said the small six horse field should suit her provided they don’t walk up front. If there is a genuine tempo she will be finishing off over the top.

Under the radar

Race 9 – 9. Ranieri

A very encouraging second last start has me looking forward to the drive on this guy. He was held up at a critical point down the back straight and worked to the outside rounding the home turn and would have made up 20 metres on the leader to just miss out. This race looks about the same quality and if I can enjoy a nice trip from the good draw, I think he will be giving this race a real shake. Not one to win out of turn but that last run was too good to ignore.
