AFTER four years of racing – during which time he has had 89 starts – Major Crocker will make his debut as a local at Globe Derby on Saturday night.
Although bred in South Australia by board member Gary Crocker, the son of Art Major has been trained in Victorian by Vince Vallelonga.
Under Vallelonga’s care Major Crocker made six appearances in SA for four wins and a second.
His victories include a clean sweep of the 2014 Southern Cross series at Globe Derby.
Vallelonga also prepared Major Crocker to secure the Group One Breeders’ Crown Final at Melton along with an Inter Dominion Consolation, the Caduceus, VHRSC and Paul Fitzpatrick Cups.
Following his recent Western Australian campaign, Crocker decided to transfer the seven-year-old to prominent local horseman Justin Brewin to focus on the SA Cup, which is scheduled for January 13.
Enjoying a short break upon his arrival, Major Crocker has pleased Brewin during track work, with the astute mentor confident of a successful debut despite his second row draw.
“The outside of the second row makes it tougher,” Brewin said. “He is the class horse of the field and is capable of winning from there.
“He has been working a treat and I’m very pleased with him. Hopefully things will go his way and he can kick off with a win.
“Whatever he does on Saturday night he will improve from the run and be better again for the Cup.”
