2One of the most emotional wins at Globe Derby Park on Friday night was the all-the-way win by Magic Trump in the Trotsguide.Com.Au Pacers Discretionary (2230m).

Magic Trump was driven by Leah Harvey and was the first win for ‘Team Teal’ in the six-week promotion to raise funds for the Women’s Cancer Foundation.

However, more sentiment for the gelding’s owner-trainer Kerry Green and her partner Phil Westbury who had the misfortune to have their Mallala property razed by what was called the Wasleys fire which destroyed 100,000 hectares of South Australia burning through many towns.

Magic Trump is normally driven by Kerry Green but unfortunately on the day before, she was told she was required for work so Harvey picked up the drive.

In November 2016, Green and Westbury’s property was completely destroyed by the fire which had begun at nearby Pinery resulting in the loss of house, stables, gear and sadly, most of their horses.

“Understandably we were shattered by the result of the fire,” Westbury said.

“Kerry loves her horses so the loss of most of our team really hit her hard so we made the decision to buy Magic Trump to give her an immediate replacement.

“I’m sure it was the correct call and helped Kerry’s healing process.”

Friday was the gelding’s first win at his 41st start for Green but he had been placed several times and had been running quite well over the past month.

Well backed at $5.10, Harvey had Magic Trump away well from gate two in the stand start and the gelding led throughout to score by a half head from Holme On The River ($4.40) with Majestic Lustre ($2.70 fav), 14 metres away third.

Harvey was delighted to win for Green.

“It was really bad luck for Kerry,” Harvey said.

“I’m pleased to have been able to step up and give her a win, especially wearing the teal pants.

“To drive any win for the cause, let alone the first one is fabulous.

“I remember Jodi Quinlan championing the cause in Victoria a couple of years ago and wanted SA to step up to the plate.

“Now as part of the cause being Australia wide they have stepped up and it is tremendous.

“I am delighted to be a part of it and hopefully will get a few more winners before it finishes.”
