Globe Derby Stakes placegetter Kosimo commenced his preparation for the Group 2 Raider Stakes scheduled for later in the season with a dominant first-up win in Hobart on Sunday evening.
The Mark Jones prepared gelding was driven by his son Malcom and went around at odds of $11 from the outside of the front-row draw in the event restricted to four-year-old and older pacers with no more than four lifetime wins.
“We knew he would be competitive but knew whatever he did, he would improve on,” said winning driver Malcom Jones about the pacer.
“I went back from the wide draw, and he just floats around until the blinds are pulled, so we ended up about 16 metres behind the last horse early and didn’t tack on till the 1400 (metres) where he started to travel.
“I didn’t have to pull three-wide till the 700 metres, and we just strolled up to them and ran past them pretty easy in the straight,” explained Malcom.
The Year 12 Launceston College student explained that his father would continue to find suitable races for the gelded son of Major Bronski in the lead up to the Group 2 Raider Stakes.
No date has been set for the premier four-year-old Tasbred event, which is expected to be held in the back half of the season while owners and trainers eagerly await the feature race list and race dates for the 2021-2022 financial year.
Malcom was also full of praise for the development opportunities he has been able to gain from Beauty Point based trainer-driver’s Rohan Hillier and Conor Crook, who he works for four mornings a week.
Two-year-old Betting Line filly Extrinsic remains undefeated after two-starts with another victory in Hobart on Sunday.
The Kate Hargreaves-trained filly is raced by several owners, some of whom are involved in their first pacer after contacting Hargreaves online after deciding to get further involved in the industry after enjoying a night at the races.
The Betting Line Filly was driven by Conor Crook, who scored with Iden Gorgeous to her third win in a row in the second race.
Another impressive winner on the program was three-year-old geldings Something Better, who was having his second start since joining the Kristy Butler stable.
From barrier four, driver Mark Yole took the gelded son of Bettors Delight to the lead and was never in doubt to score a 12.7-metre win.
