Johnathon Kingston-Mayne’s rekindled interest in Harness Racing has led to the former leading trainer starting the 2015/16 season with a bang.
Kingston –Mayne has trained seven winners thus far this season, including a double at Globe Derby on Saturday 3rd October with Maywyns Zephyr, which scored an impressive win first up after trialling well. His other winner on the night was the in-form mare, Caroline Bay.
Maywyns Zephyr is a 6 yo by under rated stallion, Blissfull Hall from the Christian Cullen mare, Chrissy Sheffield. Maywyns Zephyr has now won 14 races plus 22 placings from just 59 starts.
Caroline Bay is owned by Michael Taylor – the Australian representative for Nevele R Stud – who is a strong supporter of South Australian Harness Racing. The 4yo mare has found form this season, winning twice from 5 starts, as well as a second and two thirds to go with her victories.
Kingston-Smith has elected to use talented young reinsman Michael Smith in recent times, and the combination is having great success. Smith came off with a treble the previous week and a double last Saturday night . Smith’s tally for the season has risen to 9 winners. Their other starter on the program was Metrorama, which finished second to the Dani Hill trained and driven, Lis Tureen. After sitting in the breeze, Metrorama did a good job to finish within four and half metres of the winner.
Kingston-Mayne dominated the training ranks some five years ago with the likes of Ohoka Nevada, Cullens Legacy, the Derby winner Glengowa, and many more. In fact in 2010/11, Kingston-Mayne topped the state’s leading trainers award with 118 winners .The following season he was runner up to Les Harding with 84 winners, before downsizing his team. Last season saw him surge up the table again to finish third behind Ryan Hyhorec and Les Harding – he trained 47 winners that season. Kingston-Mayne once again looks on target to be a force in the leading training ranks in this state.
