The Honan property ‘Killarney’, located near Canowindra in NSW, has been in the family for more than 40 years and has produced many outstanding horses. Spanning more than 768 acres of highly fertile red loam soil, Killarney will go up for auction on Friday July 31 at 10:30am in King Street Sydney.
Wayne Honan admits it has been a tough decision to sell the property and while it could be bought and used for farming purposes he is hoping that it is purchased by someone involved in harness racing.
“I’d like to see it continue as it is setup currently because everything is already there and functioning but that will obviously be a decision for the new owners,” Honan said.
“There has been a lot of interest in the property since it was first listed, actually I spoke with the agent today and there are a couple of inspections due tomorrow, it is obviously pretty cold at the moment and we’ve had a couple of inches of rain lately but it is looking very nice.”
There is a comfortable four/five bedroom homestead set in landscaped gardens with an in-ground salt water pool on the property, a large number of stables including an eleven stable circular colt barn, a fourteen box barn, a mares nine box complex with adjacent covered steel horse yards, vet crush, laboratory and 1000 metre training track.
“We’ve downsized a lot in the past twelve years, we have gone from 50 mares to eight and I’ll be looking to drop back to four mares and have a couple at places like Brooklyn Lodge and Yirribee or maybe even Queensland in the future.
“I’m moving to Sydney and it will take a while to get use to city living because while we had Condell Park, we would only be in Sydney for six weeks or so and then head back home.”
Honan is planning on training one or two horses into the future.
“Once Menangle is completed and has stables then I will probably look to have one or two in work but that will be further down the track.
“The land values at somewhere between $2 and $2.6 million but for someone interested in harness racing everything has already been set up for them, all the hard work has been done, so we’ll just wait and see the interest in the property when it goes to auction.”
