THERE’S a lot to be said about holding the fort, as former Hunter Valley horseman Jack Callaghan has discovered in recent weeks.
With his bosses Belinda and Luke McCarthy away campaigning in Queensland with the stars of their team, Callaghan has been left to fly the flag for the team at Menangle.
That has also meant keeping the rest of the team safe and dry at Cobbitty during the disastrous floods that have hit nearby Camden.
It has also meant local trainers have been quick to take advantage of Callaghan’s presence and he is again the man to follow should Menangle’s meeting go ahead today [Tuesday].
With most of Team McCarthy either racing in Queensland or spelling or just having a quiet week, not one of them will be racing at Menangle.
Yet Callaghan may be aboard as many as four favourites on the nine-race card scheduled to kick off at 12.40pm should the flood waters recede enough for the horses and floats to get into the track.
“The track is fine however the viaduct was still flooded today,” Club Menangle chief executive Bruce Christison said yesterday.
“Hopefully access will be back by tomorrow morning.”
Callaghan has an enticing book of drives starting with handy square-gaiter Law Legend for Graeme Hartman in Race 1.
Yet to win in nine starts this season, Law Legend continues to earn cheques and has a great affiliation with Callaghan and has been installed the $3.50 early favourite for the opener.
Trainer Michael Doltoff had also jumped at the opportunity to make use of Callaghan’s talents, however, has had to scratch all of his runners at today’s meeting.
Another local trainer David Waite hopes Callaghan can get his veteran pacer Clementsorrell back into the winners’ list when the 310-start veteran goes around in Race 4 as a $4.50 second favourite.
