Michael Bellman gave a salute as he crossed the line victorious aboard Arber in the Graham Jacka Holden Wedderburn Pacing Cup.
“It’s not every day you win a cup,” he said.
The Ararat reinsman drove three winners on the program and has 42 for the season so far.
“It’s the best start to the season I’ve ever had,” he said.
Bellman said nine-year-old Arber had been racing well without a lot of luck heading into the Wedderburn Cup.
Once he found the spot behind the leader Loong Nien yesterday he was confident the Tim Bolitho-trained pacer would get his chance.
“I knew John (Justice) was pretty keen to hold the front. The key was getting to the outside. Once I got clear at the turn I was pretty confident.”
Bellman said he was glad to “repay the confidence” of owner Philip Nott and trainer Bolitho.
“They’ve been great supporters of mine,” he said.
