hez the one -1Three year old, Hez The One, will look to become just the seventh colt or gelding to win the Southern Cross Final at both 2 & 3 years of age. He will join Popular Port, which won in 1984 and ’85, Pappy Mccoy won in 1989 and 1990, William Belle in 1992 and ’93, Robust Venture in 1996 and 1997, Hes A Corka in 2002 and 2003, and Alzona completed the double in 2007 and 2008.

Nine fillies have registered consecutive wins, with Zamboo Anger the futurity’s record holder. Not only was she successful in the 1985 and ‘86 fillies’ Finals, Zamboo Anger also upstaged her male opponents in 1985 when a super final was run. Whats Emma Got will have her work cut out to become the tenth filly to complete the double, when she takes on her nemesis – the Emma Stewart trained, Lovelist.

Hez The One, trained by Rebecca East, is raced by Graham Cole (his breeder) in partnership with Greg McDonald. Last season Hez The One was driven by David Harding. With Harding sidelined by injury, his partner Dani Hill will step up to take the reins on board the Jemeres Jet youngster.

His win in the semi-final was dominating, winning by 14 metres, untouched by Officianado (Jayson Finnis) and Loanshark (Wayne Hill).

The barrier draw will likely be a key to Hez The One joining the elite club of dual winners. Trainer, Bec East, is hoping for a middle draw as she believes he over traces if forced to lead.
