TALENTED youngster Hesashark will return to racing this weekend as he is readied for another feature race campaign.

Given a short break following his eye-catching performance when second in the South Australia Derby last month, Hesashark is being primed for the Southern Cross.

Unfortunately for trainer Dale Afford, the three-year-old’s preparation is going to be longer than anticipated.

Originally programmed for mid-May, the Southern Cross has been postponed to a date to be determined due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Last season Hesashark captured the two-year-old Southern Cross Consolation.

“The Southern Cross is his main aim for the remainder of the season,” Afford said. “I based his work around the series being in May, but now we’ll have to wait and see when that will be.

“Until then I’ll just have to find what I can for him and keep him ticking along as good as possible.”

Pleased with the gelding’s progress, Afford is quietly confident Hesashark can win at Globe Derby on Saturday night despite being first-up for seven weeks.

To be driven by the astute horseman, the son of Shadyshark Hanover is the widest runner from barrier six.

“It’s not an ideal draw,” Afford said. “Horses like Sir Lucas and Maharajah were already going to be hard to beat without them being inside him at the start.

“We’ll just have to see what happens in the run and hope for the best on the night.”
