WHILE he is grabbing more than his share of headlines, he isn’t the only Hector poised to make a racing return.
After almost two years on the sidelines, Hectorjayjay had an eye-catching trial at Albion Park last Tuesday, which has prompted a string of articles and even radio interviews which are still happening a week later!
In 2018, the gelding’s connections were told he may never race again after sustaining a series of serious leg injuries.
But after a lengthy spell and being sent to Queensland trainer Jack Butler, Hectorjayjay has a new lease on life and is close to a comeback.
At Globe Derby tonight another Hector – Im Hector to be precise – is set to head back to the track.
Given two starts earlier in the season, Im Hector was then sent for a break by trainer Claire Goble.
“After he had a couple of starts I sent him to a paddock for a month,” Goble said. “Just because he’s a young big-boned horse and a break would be beneficial.
“He’s come back a more sensible horse and can hopefully do a good job tonight.”
Fourth upon debut, Im Hector was then triumphant against older opponents – a scenario he faces during his first-up assignment.
To be driven by Wayne Hill, the squaregaiter is the sole runner on the 10-metre line.
There are five starters on the 20-metre mark, two facing a 30-metre back mark and one on the front row.
“I have been happy with his work, but given the conditions we face at the moment I haven’t been able to trial him,” Goble said. “So he is going into tonight without that extra work.
“I’ll be happy if he can run a good race knowing whatever he does tonight he will be better for the run.”
