Chillin has had an impressive start to his WA career, with two wins from just his three starts, but on Saturday night the four-year-old claimed the feature at Albany, the Harry Capararo Memorial Sprint Final.
Harry Capararo, a stalwart in the racing industry and an astute breeder in the great southern passed away in 2019, but his honour lives on through the infamous ‘Adda; prefix that we still witness today going around WA tracks.
Standing Rich And Spoilt at stud, his passion was undeniable, with his stallion siring over 300 winners, but it was his kind and giving nature he is remembered most for, and this sentiment wasn’t lost on Michael Young who claimed the feature on Saturday night, one he had set Chillin towards from the moment he stepped foot into his stable.
“One season we were down in Albany with heaps of horses working at the beach every morning and our car broke down,
“Harry came out to our stables a day or so later and it came up in conversation. He left and came back with a Ute and said use it as long as you need it,
“We never asked or expected it, but that was just the kind of person he was.” Michael Young said.
Chillin took out the first of the Harry Capararo Memorial Sprint Preludes on December 22, after the $1.4 favourite worked his way to the lead, dominating the field with a comfortable winning margin of 20.7m.
With Stuart McDonald in charge again on Saturday night, Chillin started as the $1.26 favourite in the $11,000 final and after starting from barrier four over the 1832m sprint trip, was able to travel in the breeze for the entirety of the journey, coming out on top with a 2.6m margin over Alta Freeway in 1:59:7.
Michael Young sent three horses down to Albany on Saturday, a decision that paid dividends for the stable with Firefly successful in race four on the card, and Sporting Grace the runner-up in the second on the card.
Albany has now run four of their ten meetings on offer this season, with meeting five coming up this Saturday, January 20 which will see the $20,000 Albany Cup highlighting the meeting.
