Kyle Harper celebrated his 30th birthday at Gloucester Park on Tuesday night in fine style, driving rank outsider El Sunami to a shock victory at $99.50 on the tote in a 2130m event.
El Sunami, bred and owned by Danielle Maguire and trained at Wanneroo by Robert Saligari, enjoyed an ideal passage, one-out and one-back, before Harper switched him three wide 650m from home. The ten-year-old sustained his effort, hit the front with 120m to travel and won from Caruba and Starlight Brigade.
This ended a losing sequence of 19, stretching back to December 7 last year when he was a $41 outsider who sat behind the pacemaker Dream To Believe before winning from $91 chance Just A Horse.
The quinella on Tuesday night paid $421, the exacta $1489.50 and the trifecta $9630.20.
El Sunami is a real veteran, having had 191 starts for 11 wins, 15 seconds, 20 thirds and $104,026 in prizemoney. His dam Tropical Sky also succeeded at handsome odds, with her 11 starts producing wins at Northam (at $22.60) and Gloucester Park ($18.50).
