Southland trainer Clark Barron has two strong chances in Crime Scene and Some Excusesomewhere at Winton on Thursday.
Crime Scene won fresh-up at Gore two weeks ago over hotpot Tas Man Bromac and Barron believes he can repeat the dose over his rival in the $12,000 Macca Lodge Hacp (2400m stand).
Crime Scene has a 25-metre advantage over Tas Man Bromac in the handicaps, but the key will be the start.
“He can be a little bit funny from the stand and it’s just a matter of how quick away he is.”
Barron also rates maiden Some Excusesomewhere in the first.
He sat parked out for most of the last lap at Gore and battled on well for fifth. “He just blew out that last bit and will have taken a lot of benefit from the run.’’
FLYING DOCTOR
No Doctor Needed continues his road to the New Zealand Cup in Thursday night’s $12,000 Te Awamutu Cup at Cambridge.
He is one of three runners, along with Northview Hustler and Robbie Burns, nominated for the NZ Cup (3200m) on November 14.
If he makes the start line, it will be his third attempt after running ninth behind Arden Rooney in 2015 and seventh behind Lazarus last year.
The Steve Telfer-trained pacer resumed at Alexandra Park a fortnight ago and ran an excellent second in a mobile sprint behind fitter stablemate Better B Amazed.
“I was happy with No Doctor Needed’s first-up run,” Telfer said.
“He was a bit big for it but he’s definitely improved with the run and everything points to him being a lot sharper this week.’’
