Gulgong in the Mid-Western region of NSW was a booming town in the goldrush days of the late 19th Century. It was also the childhood home town at that time for the Australian bush poet icon Henry Lawson.
These days the town , situated just north of the tourist town of Mudgee , is home to around 2,000 people including a young couple who are rapidly making a name for themselves in the Harness Racing Breeding world.
Ty and Kayla Robson , who trade under the moniker of KTR Standardbreds , will consign a quality draft of four yearlings to the Sydney APG Sale in early March next year – 3 Colts by the “ Great White Blaze “ Sweet Lou and a Filly by the dominant Bettors Delight.
Ty was more interested in the racing department of Harness Racing in his younger days and the first horse he purchased , from his namesake but no relation Flora Robson [ current President of Harness Breeders NSW ] called Jaccka Sudi had him hooked after winning seven races back in 2009 and 2010.
Ty actually drove Jaccka Sudi to his first two wins after taking over the training in October 2009.
Ty , who is a Building Inspector and Kayla , a Town Planner were transferred to Nyngan , NSW around six or seven years ago and with no Harness Racing track within a cooee they decided to breed the two mares they had been racing when based in the Newcastle region.
Thus began their entrance onto the Breeding stage of Harness Racing . After a further move in employment to the Town of Mudgee and purchasing a sparkling little property at Stubbo , on the outskirts of Gulgong , Ty and Kayla are now developing a highly commercial band of broodmares.
Their latest addition to the matrons paddock is Lislass , a Christian Cullen mare , who is the dam of an impressive Sweet Lou Colt bound for the APG Sales ring in Sydney. This colt is a half brother to Escalera 1.50.1 and a full sister to the recent Menangle 2 year old winner Our Ultimate Lizzie 1.54.3 .
The other three mares who have Yearlings entered for Sydney are by the leading Sires In The Pocket , Bettors Delight and Mach Three so Ty and Kayla have invested wisely in their Bank of broodmares.
The couple are hands on horse people who present their Yearlings as well as any Vendor at the various APG Sales. This will be their fourth or fifth draft to the APG Sales in 2022.
“ I’m impressed with the direction and initiative of the APG Management over the past 18 months “ said Ty recently “ and the Vendors Bonus of $10,000 if one of our yearlings makes the rich Finals at Menangle is an initiative that we couldn’t resist . “
Henry Lawson may have penned a good yarn through his stories and poetry over 100 years ago but this Gulgong couple can sell you a dream ….. that just might come true.
