25 January 2018 | Gary Crocker, Chairman, Allwood Stud Farm 2018 SA Yearling Sale Committee
When the exciting news started leaking out about a new sale for yearlings that would be eligible for South Australia’s first ever Group One race series for 2YO’s, “The Allwood” taking place at the Magic Millions Sales Complex, Morphettville, SA on Sunday the 11 February, Ben Settree (and his wife Melanie), after having a family meeting with Doug and Janet Moore, made direct contact asking how the family based business could support the concept. The team at Brooklyn Lodge were “taken” that the event (as they were hearing it), had a very clear goal of getting more money for owners of two, three and four year old horses to race in both South Australia and nationally.
Once it was confirmed to the owners of Brooklyn Lodge that the sale /race series would have a prize chest of more than $200,000, a long haul trip from Bathurst to Adelaide all of a sudden didn’t seem all that far.
When we contacted Ben today he went on to say:
“Clearly SA BOTRA & HRSA have been able to secure some very skilled people who were prepared to invest a lot time, energy and their own resource’s free of charge in order to change juvenile racing in that state, for the better.”
“We also, as a family, made the decision (rightly or not), that if Brooklyn Lodge was to make the long trip, we would bring some of our very best yearlings from strongest mare families so that owners and buyers could come forward and bid with confidence. We want to see Brooklyn horses giving great excitement, joy and financial return for their owners.
We knew from day one with the riches of the race/series this event would be a smash hit. The big risk for all vendors is that one question: ‘will the buyers come?’. We believe it’s a punt worth taking for betterment of the sport.”
Ben and Melanie are very friendly, good harness racing people, so make the effort to speak to them over the sales weekend. You won’t be disappointed. The team at Brookyn Lodge have set the standard for selling yearlings in this country – one of their colts last year set a new record of $245,000 in the ring.
