Veteran square gaiter Glenferrie Typhoon is firmly on track to contest the Inter Dominion trotters championship in Melbourne in December and trainer Matt Scott is confident the nine-year-old will notch his sixth win in a row by proving too fast for his nine rivals in the 2130m Robbie Dewar Trotters mobile at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

Scott predicted that Glenferrie Typhoon was set to really make the sparks fly this week after comfortable victories at each of his five previous outings, three at Gloucester Park and two at Pinjarra.

“I’m extremely happy with him and if he’s going to Melbourne he’s got to start running fast, and I’ve got to get him fitter,” Scott said. Glenferrie Typhoon will start out wide from barrier seven, but he possesses such dazzling gate speed that he appears certain to be able to scorch straight to the front.

However, Wundowie trainer-reinsman Bruce Stanley insisted that Glenferrie Typhoon would not be able to simply stroll to an easy victory, saying that his trotter Lightning Calder would be putting plenty of pressure on the star trotter.

Lightning Calder has resumed after a spell in splendid form with two close seconds followed by two strong wins from four starts. Lightning Calder started from the 60m mark in a field of seven over 2503m at Gloucester Park on Tuesday night and gave a powerful display to win from Hot N Fast and Diamond Geezer.

Stanley said that he was not worried that the fractious Lightning Calder was placed outside the draw in mobile events and therefore had to start from the No. 9 barrier.

“He’s better off out at nine than anywhere else because in a mobile he has got to get rolling and it suits him at gate nine which goes faster than the inside barriers,” he said.

“On Friday night I daresay Lightning Calder will roll to the breeze, and if we get there, we won’t be running 33sec. or 32sec. quarters. We’ll be trying to beat Glenferrie Typhoon. We’ll be out to win, not just to run second but I must concede that it will be tough to beat Glenferrie Typhoon.

“I bought Lightning Calder from Victoria two years ago and he has been a very good investment, winning more than $110,000 in WA from nine wins and 26 placings from 59 starts here.” The gelding is raced by Stanley and his daughters Talitha and Larissa and Larissa’s partner Ry Sandison and now boasts a career record of 110 starts for 21 wins and 40 placings for earnings of $197,118.

Meanwhile, Stanley’s outstanding chestnut trotting mare Itsgettingcalder has been retired to stud in Victoria after having 16 starts in WA for eight wins, six placings and stakes of $75,519 to take her career record to 52 starts for 13 wins, 21 placings and $140,564 in prizemoney.
