After nearly 10 years, harness racing will return to Gawler on Sunday, March 4 with a heritage and family race day.
The Gawler Harness Racing Club has a long history in South Australia racing at several venues and club president Peter Bain is proud to lead the club into a new development.
The one-off family-focused meeting will comprise six-races at the club’s new track on Two Wells Road with the opening event at 3.06pm.
The first recorded harness races in Gawler were held in 1910 at the Evanston racecourse.
In 1937 the Gawler Trotting Race Club was formed and the inaugural race for the newly formed club was held in 1938 at Willaston. The Club moved to the Gawler Oval before heading to a property on Weaver Road which was acquired for the Northern Expressway development. The club’s last meeting was in June, 2008.
Tony Piccolo, the Member for Light, will be at the track on Sunday.
“I have been very privileged to be able to work alongside the local committee, and the industry body HRSA, to help harness racing return to Gawler,” Mr Piccolo said. “The family fun day will be a great day for harness racing and local families.”
Free admission, free children’s activities including face painting and pat the pony, a colourful market place, food vendors, on-course tote and bookmakers along with sensational harness racing will make this historic return a truely fabulous day.
Gates open at 1pm, first race 3:06pm.
