IT has been a long five weeks on the sideline for Cawdor reinsman Gavin Fitzpatrick, following a nasty race fall at the Penrith Trials.
The talented horseman was left with severe lacerations to his knees which recovered better than was initially expected, resulting in his doctor giving him a clearance to return to race driving, which he did at Tabcorp Park Menangle last Friday.
“It was most definitely one of the worst injuries I have experienced in my life, but things are on the mend, and I am back in the gig, so it is upwards and onwards from here,” said Gavin.
“I was humbled by the number of well-wishers and those who offered their support and I have to thank each one of them.
“The assistance offered to me and my family during my layoff was truly overwhelming.
“I drove two third placegetters at Menangle upon my return and I am yet to get back into the winners’ circle, but hopefully that may change tonight.
“I have two really nice drives at Penrith, including Yankee Ideal in the first race.
“The colt has been most consistent this season winning two races and has been placed on four occasions.
“He has drawn wide in gate five but if I can find a forward position early and the speed is on, I am confident he will figure in the finish.”
Fitzpatrick only has the two drives tonight and will have to be patient as his second runner, Pawshas Bling will contest the final event on the eight-race program.
“Pawshas Bling is a nice filly by Bling It On,” he said.
“We raced her mother My Sweet Pawsha, who was a handy performer, winning seven races.
“The mare was good to us, and we are hoping that this filly can do the same.
“She is definitely showing good early signs to indicate that.
“Her third placing on debut here at Penrith was promising and although she has drawn on the back line tonight, the smaller field will aid her chances and she should go close to winning.”
Goulburn trainer Brad Hewitt is heading up to Penrith tonight where he has two well-fancied runners engaged.
Recent Wagga winner, Debutante Party (Race 2) should lead and win from gate four while last start Menangle winner, Captain Dan is the one to beat in Race 3.
