Bathurst filly Jewel Melody proved that she is all class after winning her fourth Group 1 feature for the season in Saturday night’s $104,000 Qbred Triad Final at Albion Park for two-year-old filles.
Trained and driven by Bernie Hewitt, Jewel Melody joins an esteemed list of fillies that have taken out the futurity final, earning connections more than $300,000 from 11 starts.
Owners Wayne and Julie Loader collected their sixth Group 1 trophy for the season with the filly, their other talented pacer Ripp winning two.
Following Saturday night’s win Hewitt was left in awe of the feats of his filly and claimed that the Triad final victory was Jewel Melody’s best to date.
“She went super tonight,” said Hewitt.
“They really stretched her out early in the race and she had to work harder than I would have liked to find the pegs.
“Luckily once we found the front, she got a bit of a breather which enabled her to have enough in reserve to be able to run away from her rivals.”
The winning margin was a widening 13 metres, and she posted a slick mile rate of 1:53.6.
“She was at full tilt on the line, but it was her grand final and I did not want to leave anything to chance,” said Hewitt.
“Her next challenge will be in November when she will contest the Breeders Crown series in Victoria.
“That will allow me to give her a three week let up in the paddock and then have her ready in time for the series.”
In a successful night for Bathurst pacers, the Chris Frisby owned and trained Aunty Bella claimed victory in the listed final for four-year-old mares.
Aunty Bella has been a regular in Queensland, traveling between states to contest feature races for her age and sex.
She produced a tough performance on Saturday night after facing the breeze for last mile of the of the 2138 metre trip.
When asked for the supreme effort by driver Shane Graham, Aunty Bella responded, racing clear to score by almost 10 metres and accounting for a talented line up of mares.
Goulburn Club will race this afternoon, conducting a seven race program and Victorian visitor Matthew Craven appears to have two winning chances with Banksofthemurray (race 5) and Regal Reggae (race 7).
