Woodend Beach junior driver Andrew Fitzgerald had his first training success from just his second runner to race when new recruit Black Art delivered at Addington on Friday.

Black Art overcame a wide gate for driver John Dunn, who found a good spot midfield on the outer, then improved wide from the 1600m to take command with a lap to run. Black Art held tenaciously, beating Arthur Lowe, who was left in the open over the last lap, by a neck.

Fitzgerald has worked in various Canterbury stables and an Australian stable before taking out a licence to train.
