RISING star Sergeant Lou’s prospects of joining his dam as a Group One winner have been dealt a cruel blow.

From triple Group One star Bellas Delight, Sergeant Lou is engaged in Saturday night’s New South Wales Derby at Club Menangle for trainer Kari Males.

The colt qualified for the Blue Riband by capturing the R C Simpson Memorial around the world class venue three weeks ago.

To Males’ and connection’s dismay, Sergeant Lou has drawn barrier 10 in the $200,000 Final, but slots into nine with the removal of the emergencies.

American Spirit is the only runner drawn wider!

TAB Fixed Odds have responded by listing Sergeant Lou at $7, with Kiwi raider, We Walk By Faith, heading the market at $1.85 from the pole.

Prepared by the father-and-son combination of Mark and Nathan Purdon, We Walk By Faith was impressive winning his Derby heat last weekend.

“It’s not an ideal draw, but it is what it is,” Males said. “The good thing about Lou is he is versatile.

“He can go forward and do a bit of work or be driven quietly and come home with a good sprint.

“We’ll have to think about the race, but it will all boil down to how they come out on the night.”
