Another hugely successful weekend has catapulted Dexter Dunn to the very top in North America.
At Woodbine Mohawk in Canada, the 10-time New Zealand champion was again at his very best as he clinched four of the night’s Breeders Crown features, including a record-equalling win with the world’s fastest horse Bulldog Hanover.
That saw him top $US13m in stakes earnings this year, overtaking previous leader Tim Tetrick.
Recognised as one of, if not the, world’s best drivers, Dunn has earned $13,630,565 in stakes this year, while Tetrick is just $27 shy of $13m at $12,999,673.
Dunn is now in pole position to win a fourth consecutive Driver of the Year title as voted by the US Harness Writers Association. He won it in 2019, 20 and 21.
A key part of Dunn’s success this year has been his association with the sensational Bulldog Hanover. The sport’s undoubted superstar, who ran a world record 1:45.8 in July, Bulldog Hanover has won nearly $1.5m this year alone, with his latest victory coming at Woodbine Mohawk on Saturday night (Canadian time) when he won the $600,000 Breeders Crown Open Pace by nearly four lengths in 1:46.8. It was a Breeders Crown record and also equalled the track and Canadian record. The horse has won 27 times in just 36 career starts.
Dunn also won the $350,000 4YO Breeding Crown Trotting Mares feature with Bella Bellini, while Jiggy Jog took out the $675,000 Breeders Crown Championship for the 3YO Trotting Fillies in a Canadian record of 1:51.2. His other winner was with Ecurie D in the Breeders Crown Open Trot.
He then followed up those four victories with three more at Kentucky’s famous Red Mile circuit the next day.
He now has 266 wins for the year. That puts him 29th overall in North America with Aaron Merriman leading the way with 725 wins though when it comes to winning the big money races Dunn is now in a league of his own.
