After being good enough to run second at the Harness Jewels, Queen Bee Bardon’s career win-to-starts ratio should probably be a lot better than what it actually is.
With four wins from 30 starts, the Ben Waldron-trained mare isn’t doing a bad job on the track but battles off the track have probably inhibited the ability to produce more victories.
But at Addington on Thursday night, those battles were forgotten as the speedy five-year-old mare blasted a handy field off the track to win the junior drivers’ event in the hands of Matt Anderson, breaking a 15-month long drought from the winner’s circle in the process.
To be fair to Queen Bee Bardon though, highlighting a winless year probably doesn’t do her justice considering that since her victory back in January last year she has raced against and in some cases placed behind the likes of Better B Amazed, A G’s White Socks, Let It Ride, Piccadilly Princess, Bettor Joy and Bonnie Joan.
So, it hasn’t been easy going.
But facing a slight drop back in grade on Thursday night, Queen Bee Bardon was a big fish in a small pond and when the speed went on mid-stages, Anderson waited and pushed the go button down the back, blowing his rivals off the track to win by seven lengths.
For Waldron it was just reward for the patience and understanding he’s shown the mare.
“She hasn’t been an easy train that’s for sure,” he said.
“But the ability has always been there.”
A daughter of Gotta Go Cullen, Queen Bee Bardon is raced by Gordon Guthrie, Michael Crequer and Renee Williams.
