LUKE McCarthy is adoping a “wait and see” approach with former buzz Kiwi pacer Dalton Bromac.
But all the signs are good heading into Dalton Bromac’s first run for McCarthy and wife Belinda when he tackles the third race at Menangle on Saturday night.
“We gave him a trial and he really well and his work at home has been encouraging, but I want to see him do it at the races,” McCarthy said.
“On his best form, you’d expect him to win this race, but that’s the question … will he show his best form?
“The other thing to remember is the Menangle factor. The longer I’ve been here (Sydney), the more I see how horses take a run or two to get used to the big track.”
Former trainer Benny Hill sent the one-time emerging star to Team McCarthy after he struggled to show his best form in trackwork earlier this campaign.
“It’s great to get a horse like him, but he comes with expectations given the sort of potential he’s shown,” Luke McCarthy said.
“It would be great if he could get back to his best. If he did, he’d be an ideal horse for the big races.”
Dalton Bromac boasts 11 wins from just 19 starts, but hasn’t started since a fourth at Addington on May 22.
The son of Major In Art has drawn wide in gate eight against a handy open-class field on Saturday.
In other news, McCarthy confirmed he would be spending plenty of time in Perth in coming weeks.
“I’ll be driving For A Reason and Our Hi Jinx through the Inter Dom as well as Cruz Bromac in the four-year-old races and Nike Franco in the mares’ races,” he said.
“For A Reason will be better for his first run for Bondy (new trainer Greg Bond), while Our Hi Jinx suffered from the thumps when he ran so poorly last Friday at Melton.
“Ian (Gurney, trainer) said Hi Jinx had recovered well and come through the flight to Perth in good style.”
The Kiwi-bred Cruz Bromac is considered a major player in the very strong four-year-old features where Beaudiene Boaz and Menin Gate are the glamour pair.
Cruz Bromac and Nike Franco have races on Friday week, when the first round of Inter Dominion heats will be run at Gloucester Park.
