Southern Harness – CUP DAY AT INVERCARGILL, 26 January
It is Cup Day with the Invercargill Harness Racing Club at Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill this Saturday and the club has a great day lined up.
Highlights on track are the Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup timed to go at 4.38pm for $32,000 over a distance of 3200m and the Arden Lodge Robin Dundee Crown.
The chance for anyone on course who fills in a coupon to win a seven night stay at the Peninsular Beachfront Resort in Mooloolaba plus $1000 towards your airfares courtesy of Beach Road Holiday Park is one of the big drawcards That coupon will also give you the opportunity to win with The Bet’s In The Bag where four draws will be made throughout the day to win one of several betting vouchers of no less than $100 to use on the day.
A losing ticket draw after Race 6 will win one previously unlucky punter a $50 meal voucher courtesy of Level One Restaurant & Bar. In a strange coincidence both the 1916 New Zealand Trotting Cup and the New Zealand Cup won in 2018 by Thefixer will both be on course.
The 1916 Cup is now raced for by the Invercargill Cup field each year as the 1916 winner was Cathedral Chimes owned by Invercargill businessman John Bruce Thomson who donated the trophy to the Invercargill Club.
In a nice twist Southlanders Stu and Pauline Gillan are part of the ownership group of last year’s Cup winner Thefixer and the Gillan’s have been kind enough to allow the club to display the current day Cup on the day.
Admission on the day is free as is the children’s entertainment which consists of a bouncy castle, bumper balls, kids tote and more while there will be a free bag of lollies for every child on course after Race 6.
Tent sites are available – contact Southern Harness Racing’s Promotions Officer, Lindsay Beer on 021 351 499 to learn more and to make a booking.
Thanks to the Tricode Syndicate the club has also been offering via the Southland Express newspaper the opportunity to win a share of the syndicate’s runner, Please Shuddup.
The prize includes the opportunity to spend a day enjoying hospitality with syndicate members in their own corporate box, plus benefits such as a stable visit to see the horse being geared up and should it win, a photo as part of the syndicate in the birdcage after the race. The syndicate will also place a $100 win bet on Please Shuddup in its race and also a $10 bet on every other race throughout the day for the lucky prize winner.

Waikouaiti Trotting Club Sunday 24 February
The Waikouaiti Trotting Club has decided to transfer its two day meeting in February to Oamaru from Waikouaiti, citing the option of racing on the all-weather track if the weather rules out the grass track.
“We have decided to make the move for the current season and evaluate for the future,’’ said Dick Tayler, the president of the Waikouaiti club. “The decision was based on what happened earlier this year with the weather and with regard to the Messara report although I have a reservation about the latter as there was no consultation with harness racing and greyhound people.
“We like the option of being able to switch to the all-weather track at Oamaru if the weather is against racing on the grass. We can make an early decision and give licence holders certainty. We are also concerned about the facilities at Waikouaiti with two grandstands not in good shape.”
The decision to transfer the race meeting scheduled for Sunday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 26, was made at a committee meeting of the club.
“We are hoping our sponsors will recognise the wisdom of the move and continue with their support which is greatly appreciated,’’ said Tayler.
Edward Rennell, the departing chief executive of Harness Racing New Zealand, has praised the decision: “I commend their decision. I am sure it has not been made lightly and is in the best interests of all industry participants.”
The club was forced to postpone the first day of the meeting last February from Thursday to Saturday and hold the second day on Monday when rain affected the Waikouaiti track.
The Oamaru Harness Racing Club set a precedent by switching a scheduled grass track meeting to the all-weather track on December 1 after heavy rain.
The Waikouaiti club held its second totalisator meeting at Oamaru in June, 1957 and also raced there on January 5, 1979.
