Five star racing – Addington Preview
On a feature night at Addington Raceway & Events Centre it’s hard to decide what will be the most exciting race of the night, with a number of age group features and a FFA Pace it’s promising to be a great night of racing.
Race 3 is a R59-R80 pace and offers plenty of up and coming horses looking toward feature races later in the season. Delightful Major couldn’t have been more impressive in his two race day starts winning both, he meets two other Diamond Creek Farm New Zealand Pacing Derby aspirants in Mr Yips and Cast No Shadow. Promising 4yo Cullenburn resumes in this race and will be looking to perform strongly to help book himself a trip to Auckland to race in the 4yo features there, Sociable returns to New Zealand racing after a successful winter in Brisbane others who look good chances are Nandolo, Smokin By and Samskara.
Race 4 is the Nevele R Fillies Heat 4, with many handy 3yo Fillies this season this heat promises to be an even affair. Wainui Creek running 3rd in the Great Northern Oaks and overall form makes her the logical choice but three others here are definite chances. Kendra has been in very good form this season with 3 wins 2 seconds and 1 third from her six races she shapes as a logical threat, stablemates Kayla Marie and Bubbled up have both proved more than competitive in this grade and are likely to make their presence felt.
Race 5 is the Lamb & Hayward 4 & 5 Year Old Trotting Championship. Some of the great trotters of recent times have won this race including Monbet and I Can Doosit and makes this race one for potential future superstars. Majestic Man couldn’t have been more impressive winning his last 5 races and running second in the previous 3 starts. Winterfell was brave when fresh up behind Over The Love and no doubt will strip much fitter for this, with the race being a reasonably open affair you could make cases for Sundees Son, Valloria, The Dominator, Didjabringthebeers and Majestic Hurricane.
Race 6 is the Vero Flying Stakes for 3yo Pacers, this race has been won by some of New Zealand’s best pacing talents ever including the likes of Master Musician, Il Vicolo, Courage Under Fire, Monkey King, Auckland Reactor, Lazarus and Terror To Love who dead-heated with Gold Ace. There has been an absolute stand out this year in the 3yo Colts & Geldings, Ultimate Sniper who has only tasted defeat once when beaten by stablemate Jesse Duke but other than that has looked reasonably comfortable racking up quite an impressive record. Jesse Duke is the obvious main threat and the rest will fight out for the minor spoils those including Heisenberg, Eureka, Dadndave and Memphis Tennessee.
Race 8 is the Group 2 Storer Motors New Zealand Trotting Oaks in what appears to be a very even bunch with many being chances if they receive the right luck in the running. Swiss Miss was very impressive winning the Haras des Trotteurs Southland Trotting Oaks downing most of her main rivals in this race. It’s hard to fault Cheerful this time in with her only real mistake coming in her first run back and other than that she has been right in the fight in all her races to date, Majestic Chevron has been performing very well of late and all but stole the Southland Oaks and if she happened to win this race it would be no surprise. With manners any of the rest of the 3yo Fillies can feature in the placings.
Race 9 is the Teltrac Communications Ltd Free-For-All and draws a very strong form race. Sheriff looked very good when returning to winning form last start and will look to go back to back here, Forgotten Highway was somewhat of a Spring revolution with strong performances against the countries best pacers and will look for a victorious return to racing, Letspendanitetogetha and A G’s White Socks have both been in terrific form and it wouldn’t be a surprise if either of them won. Eamon Maguire should have benefited plenty from his fresh-up performance so keep an eye on him, the rest of the field all have claims in what is a very even line-up.
Addington Raceway – Friday 22 March
Hello Everyone,
PHENOMENIAL RACING AT ADDINGTON
Racing is heating up at Addington this Friday and early April, so be sure to secure your Trackside Dining delicious packages with mouth-watering dishes and beverages in advance (Booking details are below).
The Group races on the March 22 include Storer Motors New Zealand Trotting Oaks, Lamb & Hayward 4 & 5 year Old Trotting Championship, Vero Flying Stakes and Teltrac Communications Ltd FFA. The Storer Motors New Zealand Trotting Oaks promises to be an even affair with mixed results in the last few meetings between the likes of Cheerful, Majestic Chevron, Sunny’s Little Jestic and Swiss Miss. The Lamb & Hayward 4 & 5 Year Old Trotting Championship looks just as wide open with no single trotter in this age group being able to assert their own dominance. However, one looking to stand out from the crowd in recent starts is Majestic Man who is starting to put together a handy record. Others that look to have major chances are Kings Landing, Over The Love, Sundees Son and Winterfell.
The Vero Flying Stakes looks to have a more straight forward element to it, Ultimate Sniper looks to be the leading 3 Year Old male pacer this season although the chasing pack have closed the gap in recent weeks with stablemate Jesse Duke being the first to beat Ultimate Sniper, while another to keep an eye on is Supreme Dominator.
The Teltrac Communications Ltd FFA looks to be a good lead in to the Breckon Farms & All Stars Racing Stables Easter Cup, runners who could compete are Henry Hubert who coming off a hot run at Invercargill A G’s White Socks tried hard in defeat. Being a lead up race for the Group 1 Easter Cup there will be hope around having Jack’s Legend, On The Cards and Star Galleria down to contest these races.
April 5 brings the second 5 Star Meeting of Autumn and it promises to be a night of action. The New Zealand Trotting Derby, last year Luby Lou out classed the boys. Enhance Your Calm will be looking to continue his domination of the age group. Of the chasing bunch Full Noise, Get Lucky and Lotamuscle could be contenders in this race.
The Fred Shaw Memorial New Zealand Trotting Championship should host a range of talent including ‘Used To Me’ @ Haras des Trotteurs Dominion Trot winner Marcoola will be one of the leading hopes along with other stars Speeding Spur and Ronald J. An interesting runner could be the returning champion Monbet who will be looking to return to the heights of form before some serious injuries.
The Avon City Ford New Zealand Welcome Stakes should get a field of gun 2 Year Olds, the most promising so far is the outstanding colt Smooth Deal who when doing things right has looked a step or two ahead of his rivals. Stablemates Copperfield, Flying Even Bettor and Virgil look to be his main dangers.
In the Diamond Creek Farm New Zealand Pacing Derby the Vero Flying Stakes winner will bring advantage into this coveted race, Ultimate Sniper has looked the best of the crop so far this season and is there any reason why he can’t add another Group 1 Feature to his resume?
Finally the Breckon Farms & All Stars Racing Stables Easter Cup, in a race which historically has produced many great Grand Circuit Stars the depth of the race will depend on Inter-Island raiders. Jack’s Legend looks to be bouncing back to the best version of himself racking together winning his last four races in a row, he could come into this race as the leading hope but last year’s winner A G’s White Socks will put up a fight along with other northerner Star Galleria. Sheriff returned to the winners circle recently and if he continues to improve he can feature also.
Watch this space! Good luck to everyone!

Wairio Trotting Club – Saturday 23 March
LADIES MILE DAY ON SATURDAY
The Wairio Trotting Club’s annual Ladies One Mile Day is on again this Saturday at the Central Southland Raceway in Winton.
The day will highlight fast paced one mile racing with the feature being the Vet South Equine Southern Belle Speed Series Heat for a stake of $12,000.
Every race on the programme is over the one mile distance with the first due to start at 12.10pm and the last at 5.31pm. Admission to the course is free.
Ladies Day is promoted as a special one for the ladies, of course and the Wairio Club has several activities especially for females.
Prizes In Purses was a great success last year with ladies invited to drop their losing tote tickets with their name and contact number into a bucket on course from which eight draws are made throughout the day. The winning lady on each occasion then comes to the birdcage, chooses a handbag and receives the prize that the bag contains. It could not be easier to win. Participants do have to be over 18 however to have entered a losing ticket.
Meanwhile the men can put their losing tickets into a draw for betting vouchers courtesy of on course caterers Gypsy Kitchen.
A netball shooting competition will also be held, with the great prize of a double pass to the ANZ Netball Premiership Super Sunday on Sunday 5 May featuring the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel against the Northern Mystics with other games between Magic and Pulse plus Tactix and Stars.
The Otautau Patchwork Group will have a special display on course and Kidz Kartz are also on the programme.
It is traditional on Ladies Day that the Wairio Club profile a lady who has contributed to the harness racing industry and this year Nichola Hikawai, Southern Harness Racing’s Office Manager, is the lady to be honoured.
Methven Trotting Club – 31 March
The Methven Trotting Club is well underway with preparations for our final Autumn meeting on Sunday March 31 the big feature on the day being the Woodlands Mt Hutt Country Cup over the 3,000m distance. Recent rain has improved the track which was starting to feel the effects of a dry 6 weeks.
A big focus on the day will be an attempt to assist Pete Davis and Margo Nyhan with the club encouraging a gold coin donation the proceeds of which will be added to by the Methven Club and given to the pair in whichever means would be of most assistance. Go well and lots of love Pete and Margo friend to so many in our local harness community. Kudos to committeeman Nigel Armstrong for all his efforts in this cause.
The club has arranged for former local Maurice McKendry to be guest driver and with Morrie in the twilight of his career it may well be the last chance for locals to see this very popular and talented horseman in action. Maurice is the winner of 3239 races and stakes of $28,474,507 and the club is very serious about getting Maurice driving in every race and hoping to set something up through the T.A.B. whereby he goes head to head with our other local horseman Ricky May the winner of 2901 races and $31,357,872 in stakes. Anyone who can help us with an opportunity for Maurice please ring Richard Bromley 021888900 or Mike Heenan 0272999604.
