Five Star Racing at Addington on Friday – Meeting Preview

Racing heats up at Addington for the first Five Star Meeting for 2019. Some classy fields have been assembled and some tantalizing clashes are to be promised across the one Group 1, two Group 3’s and two Listed races. The main feature being the PGG Wrightson NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes at Group 1 level which will be supported by the $150,000 PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales Series No.27 Championship for 3yo Fillies. Other features on the night are the Blue Star Taxis Summer Trotting Free For All, Canterbury Copy Services Summer Cup and the PGG Wrightson Sires’ Stakes “Harness 7000”.

Race 3 looks to be a clash of some very talented up and comers, in a Rating 56-80 Mobile that is scattered with form. Nandolo has been in fantastic form this season from his 8 starts he has 4 wins and 3 placings and looks to be on the road to racing in some of the feature races throughout the country in the future but this will be no walk in the park for him with an array of form, leading that form is Ive Already Told You winning four of his last five and looking like a horse going places. Bardot comes up with a great draw and 12 months ago she was in the winners circle in the “Harness 7000” her fresh up performance here last start points towards a strong showing, Mikey Maguire drops in class here and isn’t without a show and other must includes are J B Mauney and Smokin By.

Race 4 kicks off the first of the features being the PGG Wrightson Sires’ Stakes “Harness 7000”, this race has been won in previous years by some progressive horses who have gone on to do a very good job. Winning his last two starts Chiller Bay will be looking to add to his already impressive record and does shape up as one of the leading chances, the Paul Court trained pair of Cast No Shadow and Stick Man are both very consistent runners and will no doubt be prominent come race time here. Others to consider are Ultimate Rocker who was a luckless 7th last start, Shecandance who fought on bravely in a very quick mile at Hororata on Sunday behind some very handy fillies and Matai Minky has been performing well since resuming.

The following race being Race 5 is the Blue Star Taxis Summer Trotting Free For All, this race has a good mix of proven Group 1 talent and those who are aspiring to become competitive at the highest level. Great Things Happen could not have been more impressive last start winning comfortably by 3 lengths although this test will be tougher with Ronald J coming back into the mix after a profitable time through Decemeber. Valloria has been one of the finds of this summer winning three races on end the most recent being a 4 length rout at Amberley, Winterfell hasn’t raced since winning on Cup Day and should be competitive in this race. Over The Love should be considered after running Great Things Happen to a head here on the 25th of January.

Race 6 is the PGG Wrightson Sales Series No.27 Championship for 3yo Fillies, a small field missing some of the stars of the age group but should be a competitive race. Havtime comes south after a massive run for 3rd last start and appears to be the leading hope, she was also the winner of the 2yo version of this race last season. Nakuru returns to Addington after a difficult campaign in Auckland but comes into a race where she will be very competitive, Sezana drops slightly in grade after being not too far from Ive Already Told You last start and Takemybreathaway has looked handy enough in her two starts to date.

Race 7 on the night is the Canterbury Copy Services Summer Cup which drew out a field of 9 quality runners. Ultimate Machete will be the headline act after he got his frustrating campaign back on track with a nice win back in December, he’s not just over the line though with a few up and comers will look to test him on Friday. Those being Alta Orlando who performed well in races leading into the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup and had little luck throughout Cup Week, not much has separated Funatthebeach and Alta Maestro when they have met on the racetrack the most recent gives advantage to Funatthebeach who has strung three very impressive wins together whilst Alta Maestro could not have been more impressive coming off 20m to win the Amberley Cup last start. Headache horse in the race is Sheriff whom is very talented on his day but has had a interrupted preperation which looked to be heading back in the right direction with a 3rd placing although being a few lengths from the winner at his last start.

The last feature race of the night is the PGG Wrightson NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes at Group 1 level, the big stake has attracted runners from up and down the country. Dream About Me will be looking to return to the winners circle after a shock defeat last start, she is the class runner of the field but it wont be easy going from her second row draw. Dibaba was very impressive last start when winning the Group 2 Premier Mares Championship a repeat performance from a handy draw should take her close, Step Up and Mossdale Rose will both be chances again after placing in the Premier Mares Championship. Don’t be surprised to also see a return to form from Elle Mac, another who was disappointing last start but is much better than that and if she runs up to the best of her ability she is a grand show in this race.

Don’t miss a great night of racing!

Ten action packed races form the programme at the Winton Harness Racing Club meeting at Central Southland Raceway in Winton on Sunday.

The first race is timed to start at 12noon and the last at 5.04pm. Highlights will include the Southland Farm Machinery Gold Chip Final Handicap Trot over 2400 metres for a stake of $12,000.

The meeting takes place during the nationwide harness racing, Teal Pants Campaign which raises money for the fight against Ovarian Cancer. The Teal Pants branding refers to the colour of driving pants worn by lady drivers during the promotion. The Robin Dundee Club also invite those visiting the room to fill in a coupon to go into the draw for a $10 betting voucher while they are also sponsoring a race on the day with trophies for the winning trainer, owner and driver. They will also donate ribbons for the Kidz Kartz competitors and a trophy for the winner of the senior Kidz Kartz race.

It is a great opportunity to come along, enjoy a great day of summertime harness racing and support a great cause at the same time.
