With sons of Western Hanover now having established themselves in no uncertain manner in the top bracket as sires, Chief Marty, who is standing his first commercial season in Tasmania at the Thirlstane Stud, of Geoff Madden at Cressy, has stud credentials second-to-none.

The winner of 15 races and $210,336, Chief Marty numbered among his four successes at two the Goshen Cup and W. N. Reynolds Memorial. He took his mark of 1:51.6 as a three-year-old.

Retired to stud in Quebec, Chief Marty proved an instant success with his first racing crop producing the winners of almost $1.7million. He was a leading percentage sire with his first two crops and, at one stage, ranked third on the Canadian two-year-old Sires’ premiership.

All told, Chief Marty’s North American progeny earned more than $3.3million – an average of $21,800 per starter – with 14 in 1:55 and 24 in 2:00.

In Australia, where his oldest stock are racing as four-year-olds, Chief Marty has made an impressive start as a sire. In his first season he left 19 foals, and of these he has had seven starters so far and six are winners.

They include the metropolitan winners Our Supreme Guy 1:56 (7 wins), The Storm Chief (1:59.1) and Marty’s Hope, the good Hobart winner Frankie Falzoni and Cashwrang’s Smoker (1:57.2), all winners this season.

Western Hanover, the sire of Chief Marty, was America’s leading sire on four occasions and the highest money-winning sire of all-time. A champion pacer himself, with a record of 1:50.8, Western Hanover was the champion 2YO and 3YO of his year; he set season’s records on both mile and half-mile tracks and he ran up a record tally of $2,541,647 to the end of his two and three-year-old racing.

Chief Marty belongs to a noted female line, his dam Ladykin Hanover (1:59) being by Steady Star (1:52), world record holder from Lady Kacne, by Duane Hanover from Lady Lunken, by Goose Bay from the Billy Direct mare Reba Hanover. This is the family of the great Artsplace (1:49.4), one of the most influential sires in the world today.

Ladykin Hanover, the dam of Chief Marty, has proved a prolific broodmare. She is also the dam of world champion and Little Brown Jug winner Merger (1:53) and the successful sires F Troop (1:56.2) and The Contender (1:54).

A grand looking individual with a lovely nature, Chief Marty is standing for the affordable fee of $950 including GST.
