Four-year-old mare Caruba, who finished a distant third in a 2130m event at Gloucester Park on Thursday afternoon — racing in last place in a field of five before finishing 66 metres (22 lengths) behind the winner Ultimate Offer — bounced back in style in a 2130m event on Friday night.
The Peter Tilbrook-trained Caruba was favourite at $3.90 from the No. 1 barrier and Shannon Suvaljko dictated the terms in front. After a slow lead time and comfortable early sections, Caruba sprinted the final quarters in 28.9sec. and 28.2sec. and held on to win by a nose from Dancing With Mach, who had raced three wide for the first 550m and then in the breeze.
Caruba is by former millionaire pacer Caribbean Blaster, whose 24 wins included the 2012 Chariots of Fire at Menangle and the $400,000 Victoria Cup in December 2012 when he defeated Ma Sish and Im Themightyquinn. Caruba is the last foal out of Spirit Away, a winner of nine races and $71,250.
