Burwood Stud mare matching

Nothing is ever so good that it can’t be improved, and with that in mind, Burwood Stud offers a complimentary service to mare owners with a view to producing the best possible foals.

The mare matching test matching service, used so successfully at Burwood Stud in the past, is available each season.

Burwood Stud mares and foals

Being a commercial breeding operation, Burwood Stud offers the entire process – one-stop shopping, if you like!

From impregnation through foaling, weaning and even presentation at yearling sales, Burwood Stud does it right every step of the way.

Burwood Stud’s experienced horse handlers treat all horses as though they were their own, from breeding and pre-natal time through to foaling and beyond.

Ark Maree, the 2008 Australian Broodmare of the Year, was just one of a growing number of permanent boarders at Burwood Stud.

With improved pastures, supplemented hand feeding, prime horse country, modern facilities and loving care and attention, there’s little wonder that horses do so well at Burwood Stud…and seeing is believing!

Burwood Stud results

Despite breeding from only a handful of Stud or family-owned mares each season, Burwood Stud skites an imposing record when it comes to where it matters most -the racetrack.

Burwood Stud has made the annual Redcliffe Garrards Sale Classic its own, with sensational results in the seven-year history of the annual feature.

The Classic is open only to graduates of the associated yearling sale, and Burwood Stud products have won four of the six runnings – Cha Ching Chaching (2011), Couldntresist (2012), Designer Style (2103) and Mathilda Diventa (2014).

Like all those youngsters sent to market by Burwood Stud, these horses were for genuine sale as yearlings, and brought very reasonable prices.

Cha Ching Chaching, now at stud, brought just $4000 before going on to become a member of the prestigious ‘Hundred Grand Club;’ Couldntresist was a mere $3000 purchase, Designer Style brought just $6000 at auction and Mathilda Diventa was another $6000 buy for the lucky owners.

Burwood Stud also bred or raised Classic placegetters and finalists Stanbesideme, Flying Western, Falcon Vista, Watchinu Watchinme, Lightning Alley, Romagnola, Ultimatepartygoer, Vander Jenkins, Bundys Best, Idontcare, Rosies An Aviator, Irockmyworld, Tammalise, Drifting Away and Witch Striker.

But these Classic winners are just the tip of the iceberg for Burwood Stud products – after all, the Burwood Stud bred-and-sold Group One winner Wicked Style, which has bankrolled more than $214,000 in stakes, cost just $4000.

But the results just don’t come only for horses bred by Burwood Stud. Take Corporal Luna, which in May 2015 won the $75,000 Seymour Nursery Pace for three-year-old colts and geldings.

Champion horseman Grant Dixon’s Corporal Luna is raced by Queensland Harness Racing Board Chairman and long-standing Burwood Stud client Greg Mitchell, and ‘The Corporal’ was born-and-raised at Burwood Stud.

Breeders seeking to sell at yearling sales should be aware that Burwood Stud provided the sale-topper, at $40,000 – a filly – at the 2015 annual Redcliffe Garrards yearling sale, which proves the Stud’s name is pristine within the industry.

When champion New Zealand horseman Mark Purdon takes the trouble to buy stock from Burwood Stud – as he did with Horace Greeley – we knew we were onto something!

Burwood Stud vet

Highly-respected locally-based veterinary surgeon Dr Max Wilson attends to Burwood Stud’s horse population, sometimes on a daily basis, if need be.

Dr Wilson is widely-acknowleged as an expert in the field of equine reproduction, and it is because of his knowledge and experience, backed by the support of the Burwood Stud staff, that enables this nursery to boast such an imposing record when it comes to getting mares in foal, and keeping them that way.

Burwood Stud year-in, year-out has a great record of getting mares – even troublesome ones – in foal, with a second-to-none reputation when it comes to getting mares straight off the racetrack in foal first time.

The Denning family

Burwood Stud has been owned-and-operated since inception in 1982 by the Denning family: husband-and-wife Noel and Christine, their only sons Daniel and Jonathon and their families.

Noel Denning, a true Queenslander and born horseman, adopts only one philosophy when it comes to his beloved stock – the best.

“Good better best, never shall we rest, till our good is better, and our better best,” Noel has been known to say.

“We’ve never been ones to talk ourselves up…we let the horses do our talking for us!”
