Coo Doo is one of the more celebrated broodmares in the NZ Stud Book destined never to be classified as one of our broodmare centurions due to being five short. Coo Doo none the less has had an outstanding impact on NZ’s Standardbred breed over the past sixty years, continuing to this day, rather like her nonagenarian breeders Keith and Bevan Grice.

COO DOO (1960 Morano/Lady Dimp; family of Mavis Wood, CF N24) : unraced due to injury as a youngster; eighteen consecutive foals, fourteen raced plus two qualifiers, eleven winners, three in 2:02.0, one in 1:55.0, two $50k earners. Bred by Keith and Bevan Grice as were all Coo Doo’s progeny.

Keith and Bevan Grice

These two knowledgeable brothers have been breeding horses together for over seventy years. At the 2019 Canterbury Owners and Breeders function at Addington Raceway they were made life members of the Canterbury Standardbred Breeders Association. They have as best can be ascertained bred over one thousand winners with thirty one of them earning  $100k plus.

Members of a family steeped in harness racing, their father bred the third dam of dual NZ Cup winner of 1940’s Haughty (Prince Imperial mare); his brothers Ben and Jack raced horses and the Grice’s grandfather George made a name as a saddle trot rider of note. The Grices’ often leased horses that they bred enabling them to later breed from the fillies. Coo Doo whilst unraced would have to be the most remarkable of the foals they have bred leaving an incredible eighteen consecutive foals between 1967 and 1984 (aged 24) which may in itself be a world record. She was bred on the Grice’s Seafield Farm property (twelve miles north east of Ashburton) in mid Canterbury. Coo Doo had eight daughters who bred on successfully together with an equivalent number of successful male progeny.

Palestine, Coo Doo’s best performer commenced racing as a two year old going onto win eighteen races, placing on thirty occasions from 128 starts over eight seasons, $81,415. Raced by New Brighton TC Committeeman Bill Cook and long-time successful Otaki thoroughbred mentor George Walton. Walton had several leading juveniles in early 1950’s – 1960’s : NZ Oaks winners Sublime and Fair Symbol; Commanding (CJC Welcome Stakes, Great Northern/Wellington Guineas, Wellington Stakes [later disqualified]) and Castlerae (Waikato/Wanganui/Hawkes Bay Guineas; Churchill Stakes). Earlier Walton trained and drove Stella Derby (1928f Nelson Derby/Jennie L) to win four races in the mid-1930’s (two at Greymouth JC, Omoto course; one Victoria Park, Greymouth TC and one Westland RC at Hokitika), training locations of Addington and Hokitika.

Palestine registered four placings at age two including seconds in Methven and Canterbury Park Juvenile Stakes from the Methven stable of Clarry and Terry May (Ricky’s father). Terry May was to drive him throughout the majority of his career, with Leo May doing the steering on the odd occasion. The winner of five races at three, including Orari Challenge Stakes at Geraldine, Hororata President’s Challenge Stakes 3/4, Timaru, Methven and on ANZAC Day at Addington together with a fourth in Champion Stakes at Ashburton on Boxing Day.

Palestine, Orari Challenge Stakes

Moving to the verge of pacing Cup class at four with another four victories (nine in total) including Waikouaiti Cup, Hornby Hcp at Addington on Show Day (second on NZ Cup Day to Master Dean), Canterbury Park TC Presidents Hcp on New Year’s Day (2 miles) and Forbury Park TC Winter Hcp (class seven, 10m, Leo May driver). Palestine’s seasonal earnings ($10,235) placed him eleventh top 4yo for 1974/5 season.

A solitary victory in the Wellington Cup at Hutt Park and now trained solely by Terry May, Palestine graduated to Cup class as a five year old. Among his several placings were seconds in Lion Brown FFA to Forto Prontezza at Addington (night of my second ever visit to Addington Raceway, Saturday 24 Jan 1976) and to Captain Harcourt in Easter Invitation Stakes; thirds in Canterbury FFA/New Brighton Cup and fifths in Ashburton Flying Stakes/Ollivier Stakes. Sixth highest earning five year old pacer in 1975/6 ($12,470).

Louisson Hcp – Lunar Chance, Stanley Rio, Palestine (6) third

Palestine with almost identical stakes earned at six ($12,460; eleventh leading older horse), recorded two wins at Oamaru (Hannon Memorial) and Hutt Park. Placed in four of his first five early seasonal starts including third in Ashburton Flying Stakes prior to his Hannon Memorial victory. Unplaced over the NZ Cup carnival of 1976, placed second in Pezaro Memorial (Auckland) and on a couple of occasions at Hutt Park completed his seasonal performances.

National Hcp – Forto Prontezza, Palestine (6) second

The seven year old season saw three victories, his season starting with two fourths at Addington, second beaten a head by Balgove in the Ashburton Flying Stakes run at Addington before Palestine recorded his second Hannon Memorial victory which was followed a fortnight later by the Kaikoura Cup. Finishing sixth in the NZ Cup of 1977, seventh in the NZFFA before winning the Alan Matson FFA on NZ Derby night in a career best 3:17.2/2:02.1MR (2600mM) at Addington. Thirds in the Stars Travel Miracle Mile shortly after the Cup carnival and Clarendon FFA (career best placed 1:59.2) in the early New Year both over a mile were his only further major returns for the season (ran last in Auckland Cup; seventh leading older pacer, $20,860).

Palestine’s eight year old season mirrored that at seven with his final three wins recorded beginning with his third seasonal start in the New Brighton clubs Laing Hcp at Addington. The Dunedin Hcp at Forbury Park followed in October 1978 before a fruitless NZ Cup carnival (twelfth in Cup, fifths in NZFFA and Allan Matson FFA’s). Third again in the Stars Travel Miracle Mile and Clarendon FFA, his final career win came at Addington in one of two 1979 Interdominion Pacing Consolations (unplaced in all three heats).

After four early season unplaced efforts at nine, Palestine was retired to stud (stood at Geoff Webster’s stud near Christchurch at one stage). He sired twenty one winners (two trotters) including smart pacer Stratum his only two minute pacer, 1:56.8, $146,705, QLD Winter Cup, ID heat and he was broodmare sire of twelve (five in two minutes, one trotter) including Joker Man

Stereo Light, Coo Doo’s first foal, six NZ wins/one Addington, twenty one NA wins, 2:01.2US at nine in 1976, $37,040, Waimate Cup
