The inaugural running of the Breckon Farms Kidz Kartz Champions Cup was held on Anzac Day at Cambridge Raceway. The last race meeting on the Kidz Kartz calendar for the 2017/18 was set to be a season ending grand finale. Twelve ponies and drivers from Waikato, Kumeu and Franklin lined up to contest the Cup after qualifying via 800m races during previous months.
Zev Meredith and No Fuss Gus won the inaugural Breckon Farms Kidz Kartz Champions Cup. Zev, from Franklin Kidz Kartz, reflected on his season commenting, “So proud of him, about time we got a cup with after the hundreds of hours I’ve put into him.” Second went to Jordyn Bublitz & Chaos (Waikato), another combination that has had an outstanding season. Third Caitlin Schneider and Barlia (Franklin) coming off the back of winning the 800m Classic the previous week. Fourth Paige O’Brian and Monet (Waikato). Fifth & Best Presented Kendra Rogers and Shadow (Waikato)
The inception of the Champions Cup was brought about when it was identified, by senior Waikato Kidz Kartz driver Jordyn Bublitz, that there was a gap in racing for ponies in the 800m distance. Originally the concept was to have this event over 2 day festival and to include ponies for the 400m, 600m & 800m distance. Time constraints meant that this event was reduced to the 800m only. Inspired by the Harness jewels, it is hoped that this will evolve into an all-inclusive competition for all pony and driver types, the Pony Jewels.
With Ken and Karen Breckon hosting the presentation it was a definite highlight for everyone. It goes without saying the huge appreciation to Breckon Farms as sponsor of the event. To be endorsed by Breckon Farms shows increasing acceptance of Kidz Kartz roll within the grassroots of the harness racing industry.
