The David Hewitt trained Bon Accord Gal has put together a very strong record in a short time. The five-year-old daughter of Elsu has won eight of her thirteen career starts and bad manners have cost her victory in four of her five defeats.
The only mare to have beaten Bon Accord Gal when she has paced throughout an entire race is the Shane Tritton trained Arms Of An Angel and regular driver Brad Hewitt is looking forward to a rematch.
“I think if you swap the barrier draws around when they met it would have made it interesting, Arms Of An Angel is potentially a star mare but we think our mare is every bit as good as her,” Hewitt said.
“I have a really big opinion of Bon Accord Gal, she did it very easily on Saturday night when she won at Menangle and the Ladyship Mile qualifiers in February are her target.”
Bon Accord Gal is raced by Phil and Denise Thurston and was purchased from the New Zealand yearling sales.
“Phil and Denise have a number of horses with us, after they purchased her out of the sales they sent her to us to try and get her going.
“She’s always been a bit silly and highly strung, she’s also had a few little issues with her knees but we’ve got on top of those.”
In time, Hewitt expects Bon Accord Gal to overtake Sweet Molly Oshea as the family’s leading mare.
“I said to Dad (David) a month ago I thought Bon Accord Gal was as good if not better than Sweet Molly OShea, definitely over a mile because Bon Accord Gal has a lot more brilliance and speed.
“Over distance Molly has proved in Queensland how good she can go, she lacks a bit of high speed and that’s all that lets her down.”
Bon Accord Gal was the first leg of a driving double at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night for Hewitt with Tullow providing him his second victory on the night.
“Saturday night was probably the best he has gone for me, he was three wide for the first half and they ran a very quick couple of sectionals.
“We’ll keep taking him back to Menangle on Saturday night and depending on how he is going we might put him into the Chariots of Fire heats, I think he can run 1:51.0 with everything run to suit.”
