Barimah scored an emotional win in the United Petroleum Yarra Valley Pacing Cup last Friday afternoon.
Driven by Damian Wilson and trained by Tony Peacock, Barimah ran down short-priced race-favourite Hectorjayjay to take the lion’s share of the $30,610 stake money in the 2650-metre race.
It was a special win due to a tragedy among connections leading into the race with the heartbreaking passing of a young boy, one of the owners’ sons, who dearly loved the horse.
Wilson gave a prolonged salute as he passed the winning post, clearly an emotional success for the reinsman.
Peacock said to overhaul a horse with the class of Hectorjayjay like he did was a great sign going forward for Barimah, who will contest next year’s A.G. Hunter Cup.
Peacock has contested Hunter Cups but is yet to win the race, horses like Toe Taper (second in 2007) and Reba Rajah (unlucky sixth in 2007 and 12th in 2008 when copped a bad check) thereabouts.
“He’s the sort of horse who could run a big race in the Hunter Cup and he could win it with the right run,” he said.
Barimah rated 2:00.7 and scored by 3.8 metres over Hectorjayjay (Gavin Lang) with Charlie Machsheen third for Craig Demmler.
